Important Fire Safety Message and Video

The New Canaan Fire Department has a mission of saving lives through public education and getting the number of structure fires in New Canaan to zero. Taking the department’s annual program of public education to a higher level, New Canaan Fire Chief Albe Bassett collaborated with Connecticut Career Chiefs Association in the production of new public service videos about preventing fires through proper use of frequently used extension cords and surge protectors in residential and commercial occupancies. New Canaan firefighters are the featured spokespersons.

Bassett says New Canaan’s firefighters and fire marshal have seen numerous high-risk situations with the misuse of extension cords in residential and commercial occupancies, most often in older homes with smaller electrical services. National Fire Protection Association reports that fires started by electrical distribution and lighting equipment failures are the leading cause of residential fire property damage in the country.
