While the annual tradition of gathering at Waveny Park for picnics and fireworks will not be possible this year due to the COVID-19 virus, residents are encouraged to have a virtual celebration at home.
The event will be broadcast on Channel 79 under the direction of Bob Doran on July 3rd and 4th at 3 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm and 9 pm and can also be viewed online - click here. The 26-minute video will include an introduction by First Selectman Kevin Moynihan, a message from Chamber of Commerce Director Tucker Murphy, the singing of “God Bless America” by rising senior Megan Lydon and the New Canaan fireworks display from 2019.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the town-wide event which has been overseen in each of those years by Steve Benko, Recreation Director. Tom Stadler, chairman of the 4th of July Committee, who came up with the idea of a virtual celebration said, “This tradition would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Steve, the various 4th of July committees, volunteers and everyone who has participated over the years. Join us for this quintessential celebration.”
