Class Times
AM Classes – 7:45-8:45 a.m. Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  Students must be walked into the West School lobby and released to the monitor on duty.  No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted.  Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts.   
PM Classes – 3:35-4:35 p.m. Children will be dismissed by parent car-line only pick-up at the gymnasium.  Parents must provide a photo ID to the monitor.  All children must be signed out.

Scratch Jr. is an introduction to computer coding.  Students can create their own interactive stories and games.  In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer.

Mindful Monday Yoga for Girls

Breathe, stretch and get ready for the week ahead with Mrs. Tamburro and Mrs. Eldredge. Shine your light in our mindful community. We will practice fun, challenging and empowering yoga poses to promote self-confidence and positive self-talk. Girls will learn how to focus and center themselves through various breathing and visualization techniques. Each class will include a friendship circle, guided meditation and body awareness. Bring a yoga mat and a joyful attitude.

Strings and Recorder Cartoon Band- new class!

The band sessions will assist gr. 3-4 students to explore the basics of Jazz Improvisation.  Students will choose one of your favorite cartoon characters to become your cartoon band buddy and make up a simple tune of their own.  Students can use Mr. Levitin’s keyboard for special effects! You will also make up a video of your song and share with parents and friends at the end of the session.

Ready, set, race!  We’ll transform the classroom into a racetrack and learn how to make our cars go from fast to lightning speed.  You will build tracks out of new materials and customize your very own Hot Wheels car.  Each day we will drive, race, build, and create together to have fun and learn how Hot Wheels can relate to science.

Come join us for a fun filled culinary experience.  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful winter and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include hot chocolate cookie cups, frozen s’mores, melted snowman bark, frozen popcorn snowballs and other delicious treats! Let’s get baking!

Illustrators Are You Ready? You are going to design and create your very own cards and become young illustrators! We will use several mediums such as markers, colored pencils, pastels, paint, collage, and more.) Your designs will be professionally printed! A piece of ART that you can be proud of! You will have the choice of making a selection of cards that you would like to have in your stationary set. (Such as thank you cards, greeting cards, birthday cards, holiday cards, etc.) After the designs are chosen and printed, we will learn how to write a card and address the envelopes, so that we can start to write letters to our families and friends. Let’s show off our beautiful designs.

Quick Start Tennis is designed to introduce children to the game of tennis in a fun and rewarding way.  Equipment and court size is tailored to the needs and abilities of the children.  Tennis racquets are provided and each class will have fundamental skills built into fun games on the court.  A 1/4 coach ratio will be observed in this program.

A Club Invention module challenging students to save the homes of animals across the country.  From roving black bears to birds threatened by oil spills, Club Invention participants think of new, clever ideas for building safe animal spaces.

Rad Lab Science

Defy gravity this winter, as you join us in the lab for some incredibly unique science investigations!  Suspend a paperclip mid air, perform optical illusions to amaze your friends, transform the colors of the rainbow using milk fireworks, create ever-growing gummy bears, build your own Cartesian-diver, race your cars through fact or friction, engineer your own immune system model, manipulate your own lava lamp, experience dissolving Gobstopper colors, and more, in an all our STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

This class will expose students to the coding language JavaScript.  We will learn how to write actual JavaScript code to create interactive pictures and games.  Students will learn basic coding concepts like variables, loops, and “if statements” as they create their projects.

Written, published and distributed by our reporters, the reporters will be creating articles fact or fiction, poetry, and original drawings for our school newspaper.  Reporters will use various technologies such as: digital cameras, scanners, and software (MS Word, Tux Paint, and MS Publisher) to create the West Weekly.  The newspaper is such a fine communication tool for the West community.

Snap Circuits- new class!

Participants will be using the Snap Circuit Kit learning about electricity and magnetism to make over 300 electronic devices.  It's easy and fun!  Students will select two activities each class from the Snap Circuit book of projects and follow the colorful pictures and build exciting projects such as AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, propellers, lights, generators, and much more!!  The teacher will follow and assist the class.  All parts are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. Enjoy hours of fun while learning about electronics. No tools required.

Chess Wizards

Join your school chessmates for a fall of fun matching your skills across the board.  Beginner Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.  Students at the intermediate level will be grouped to learn at a higher level playing against more competitive opponents and advanced strategies.

This program introduces our youngest engineers to the basic concepts of engineering from a variety of engineering fields. Through open and focused exploration, children will design and construct a number of engineering projects. Examples of activities: Bottle Rockets (Aerospace Engineering), Flashlights (Electrical Engineering), Paddle Boats (Marine Engineering), and Race Car (Mechanical Engineering).

WeDo LEGO Robotics- new class!

This class is a perfect mix of fun and learning using LEGO WeDo Robotics.  Using LEGO bricks, students build a roaring lion, a hungry alligator, and a dancing monkey.  Students also learn how to program and operate their creations using a laptop computer.

Sports Variety K-1

Hope For Kibera- new class!

Build empathy for children across the globe in Hope for Kibera.  This class will teach about the culture, strengths, and challenges of Kenya, with a focus on one village called Kibera.  Through a partnership with several volunteers from the charitable organization Crossing Thresholds, we will develop video messages to send back and forth to the children in Kibera with the goal of establishing greater global awareness and sharing helpful ideas, such as how to build sack gardens in their community.

Ms. Iovino came up with this great class idea to offer the students this winter- Everyday in our lives, we face daily routines and obstacles. In Life Hacks, we will learn simple tips and tricks to open or minds and gain a different approach to tackling these problems. Example of such are putting pancake mix in a ketchup bottle for a no mess experience; quick and easy iPhone speakers made out of paper towel rolls; using binder clips to fix broken keyboard feet; using nail polish to identify different keys. This will be a hands-on class to explore many many simple life hacks and each class will include printed descriptions to bring home to show your parents.
