Class Times2:45-3:45 p.m.  Children will be sent directly to the classes at the end of the school day.  Children will be dismissed from ASF Programs at the school gym exterior entrance door.  All children will be signature released to parents only.  Late Pick-Up Policy A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 4:00 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued. Refund Policy- please read the attached information before you register for classes.

Kindful Mindful Crafting with Mrs. Charkales

Join Mrs. Charkales in making timeless crafts. The crafts are friendship based. Participants will create personalized items with a special person in mind. Working in this way encourages selflessness, consideration and thankfulness. Come enjoy some focused down time and learn some of the timeless favorites like friendship bracelets, key chains, beads, etc.

Fit Kids- new class!

Fit Kids will challenge your child’s imagination as each child develops muscle strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, postural alignment, and confidence through a series of fun yoga postures balanced with athletic training moves.  Each week students will experience a playful workout set to great music.  Each student will get a yoga mat and water.

Students help to solve the world’s challenges while battling supervillains.  The supervillains are trying to take things that don’t belong to them all over the world and have built traps that seek out those who neglect to protect their inventions.  Create disguises, build a retrieving gadget and inventions to defeat the supervillains.

Beginner Computer Programming

Join Mr. MacDonald as he teaches you the basics of programming and game creation using the simple and easy program called "SCRATCH", developed by the MIT Media Institute to create animation, music videos, Pac-Man like games, and more.  You will be designing interactive and fun games and programs that you will be able to play and share!  Using the SCRATCH creator, you will bring your imagination to life on a computer screen!

Scrapbooking Fun

Create your own scrapbook full of fun memories and share with your friends.  Each week students will use pictures to create pages for their books surrounding different themes (i.e. family, pets, friends, sports, birthdays, vacations).  Bring your own pictures and take home your very own scrapbook on the last day of class.

Spanish Adventure Club- new class!

Hola!  Join us for an adventure as we explore a variety of Spanish-speaking cultures and the beautiful language they all have in common.  Spain, Chile, Argentina, Peru—we will stamp our passports in all of these countries and more!  Students will have ample opportunities to use the Spanish they know and learn even more, all the while immersing themselves in the unique cultures of Spanish-speaking nations around the world.  Activities will include games, artistic creations, yoga, dramatic play and more!   So pack your bags and your travel journals--it’s time for an adventure!  (Please note: this is not a remedial Spanish class).

LEGO Maniacs

LEGO Maniacs consists of building LEGO creations each class.  While building creations with other students, they are also being introduced to different life skills such as negotiation, communication, self-pride, creativity, public speaking, and tolerance.  The students work together in groups of 3-5 to build one creation per group.  There is a theme each class for each group to work on.  At the end of the building time, each group tells the other students about what they have made and how they have made it in a presentation style format.  The creations are then dismantled and put back in the storage bins by the instructors.  The Lego bricks are the property of the Recreation Department and will not be distributed at the end of each class or the end of the session.  Some special awards will be announced to the students at the end of the session.

Retro Crafty Kids- new class!

Mindful Meditation- new class!

In this class, students will extend our work on Mood Meter and RULER by working on the concept of mindfulness through an introduction to meditation and other meditative activities, such as breathing techniques, gentle yoga stretches, and some fun activities to decompress and slow down our brains.

Want your child to have fun while learning more about how to be a better protector of planet Earth? Our newly formed Green Team after school club will be led by South School teachers Mrs. Cornwell and Mrs. Marsh. During the first meeting, the club members will decide what to name our new green-focused club and determine ways to make an impact at South School and the community. Due to the anticipated popularity of this program, a lottery drawing will be held for all interested students. Priority will be given to 4th Grade Students as it will be their only chance to take part in the club. Please fill out this form. You will be notified via email if selected by January 20  and must officially register on the Recreation Department website by January 31 to secure their spot. The cost of the program is $60 to cover teacher salaries and materials. The program will meet on February 11, March 10, and April 7 and May 12 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at South School and selected students are expected to participate in all sessions.

Quick Start Tennis is designed to introduce children to the game of tennis in a fun and rewarding way.  Equipment and court size is tailored to the needs and abilities of the children.  Tennis racquets are provided and each class will have fundamental skills built into fun games on the court.  A 1/4 coach ratio will be observed in this program.

Dance Around the World

Dance Around the World is a multicultural world dance class which builds knowledge and understanding of dance styles from all over the globe.  Students will learn dance steps, engage in choreography, and practice movement while briefly learning about the history of the country from which they originated.  A new dance style will be presented each week including Bollywood, African, Hip-Hop, American Folk Dances, Line Dancing, Break Dancing and many more.  No prior dance experience is necessary.

Do you like science projects?  We will explore changes in matter and color.  We will make lava lamps, fairy jars, and slime.  We will also grow geodes, rock candy, and paint with salt.

WeDo LEGO Robotics- new class!
Grades K-1; Instructor: Engineering For Kids

This class is a perfect mix of fun and learning using LEGO WeDo Robotics.  Using LEGO bricks, students build a roaring lion, a hungry alligator, and a dancing monkey.  Students also learn how to program and operate their creations using a laptop computer.

Engineering Explorers- new class!

This program introduces our youngest engineers to the basic concepts of engineering from a variety of engineering fields. Through open and focused exploration, children will design and construct a number of engineering projects. Examples of activities: Bottle Rockets (Aerospace Engineering), Flashlights (Electrical Engineering), Paddle Boats (Marine Engineering), and Race Car (Mechanical Engineering).

Want your child to have fun while learning how their small acts of kindness make a big difference? Kids Care is back by popular demand and will be taught by South School teachers Mrs. Young (formerly Barbosa) and Miss Mulhern. These service-minded teachers with giant hearts are eager to provide your 1st and 2nd Graders with a fun-filled session of age-appropriate service opportunities. Due to the popularity of this program, a lottery drawing will be held for all interested students. Please fill out this Form. Students will use various techniques including sponge painting, pointillism, masking paper, and more to create a number of fun party-animal themed projects.  From sloth smoothie glasses to safari snack bowls and party llama cake plates, your child will create unique projects you can actually use.

This innovative class on financial literacy lays the foundation for healthy financial habits early in life, empowering students with the mindset to start making sound financial decisions and develop into responsible global citizens.  Role-playing and fun activities keep students engaged including: currencies of the world; budgeting 101; prices and bartering; check and bank accounts; credit cards and debt cards; and taxes.

Rad Lab Science

Defy gravity this winter, as you join us in the lab for some incredibly unique science investigations!  Suspend a paperclip mid air, perform optical illusions to amaze your friends, transform the colors of the rainbow using milk fireworks, create ever-growing gummy bears, build your own Cartesian-diver, race your cars through fact or friction, engineer your own immune system model, manipulate your own lava lamp, experience dissolving Gobstopper colors, and more, in an all our STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

Chess Wizards
Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess, Inc.

Join your school chess-mates for a winter of fun matching your skills across the board.  Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level. 
Class Fee: $202 (Min 14/Max 22)

Class Times
2:45-3:45 p.m.  School Dismissal Manager Your child will automatically be sent directly to any after-school class that he/she is enrolled in at the end of the school day.  If your child will not be attending After-School Fun on any day, please indicate on the school dismissal manager “DO NOT SEND TO ASF TODAY”. Children will be dismissed from ASF Programs at the school gym exterior entrance door.  All children will be signature released to parents only.

Registration Information Update
If the online registration system stops you from registering because of wrong or missing information, you must contact the Recreation Department during office hours for assistance.  Birthdates and school grades must be accurate and may be the first problem that needs to be updated.

Registration Refund Policy
$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.  $25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class. No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

Late Pick-Up Policy

Registrations and Wait Lists
The registration period for the classes is posted both online.  A class registration minimum and maximum is established.  Classes that do not meet the registration minimum student number will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to the parent.  Late registrations submitted after the class begins will be with the approval of the Program Supervisor. No pro-rating of program fees will be allowed.     

Program Monitor
A Program Monitor will be on-duty in the main lobby during the ASF classes.  The monitor will have a first-aid kit and emergency management book. 

Class Cancellation
BOE class cancellations due to school closing, school late opening, or school early dismissal will be sent through the School communications. The Recreation Department will send out an email notification if a schedule change occurs due to teacher illness, special event conflict, or change of room availability.  On these days, all children enrolled in ASF classes will be sent home the “regular” way.  An automatic adding of a make-up class at the end of the schedule will occur.  THE RECREATION WEBSITE WILL KEEP AN UP-TO-DATE LIST OF CLASSES, INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP DATES ON THE WEBSITE INFORMATION PAGE. 

NURSE OFFICE AND NURSE SERVICES CLOSED
The school nurse’s office is not open at any time during the before/after-school fun programs and school nursing services are not available.  Items stored within the nurse’s office are not accessible during recreation programs.  The Recreation Department has staff monitors on duty to initiate first responder care for minor issues and activate emergency procedures for all other situations.  Parent communication is 100% part of all incidents.  Any child that has an allergy or a health condition that requires a prescribed emergency medication is required to deliver an emergency response package to the Recreation staff monitors before the first class.  This will be kept in a location for quick response and held for the 8/10-week session of classes and returned on the last day.  In a zip lock baggie labeled with the child’s name place your epi-pen; benedryl liquid or tablets (if liquid include a measuring cup); detailed instructions of the order of application ie. 1. Benedryl  2. Epi-pen.  This should come from your doctor signed by his office.  Also make sure the expiration dates on the medicine are current. Thank you
