2022 Summer Pro Instruction Youth Tennis Clinics

The Summer Youth Tennis Instruction at Mead Park will continue the successful new format from last year including one-week sessions for children ages 4-17 along with a separate clinic twice-a-week for ages 4-12.  All age catagories will provide professional instruction from Shane O’Reilly and Dan Scheuler.

Flat soled tennis shoes are required on the har-tru courts.  If you have a tennis racquet please bring it or you may borrow one at the courts. Online Registration will begin April 1st.  For all online registrations, the user needs to obtain a username and password from the Recreation Office to be able to access the system.  All Summer Tennis Clinics are open to New Canaan Residents only.  Registration questions contact the Recreation Department at 594-3600.  Instructor questions contact Dan Scheuler dscheuler@msn.com 

Refund Policy Recreation Programs and Permits- Refunds will be processed through the same form of original payment, except cash refunds will be processed by check.  No pro-rated partial refunds.  Recreation Programs- for all programs other than Day Camp and B/ASF classes, a full refund is given if withdrawal notification is received up to 7 days prior to the program start with return of unused t-shirt, less administrative fee of $5.00.  Day Camps-full refund given if withdrawal notification is received up to ten days prior to the session start, less administrative fee of $5.00.  B/ASF classes- $5 fee assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.  $25 fee assessed if notification occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.  No refunds will be issued after the class starts.  Facility Permits- no refunds on permits for Pool, Kiwanis, Tennis, Paddle.

CLASS AND INSTRUCTOR DESCRIPTIONS
Dan Scheuler- no stranger to the New Canaan Tennis as having run the Adult and Youth Recreation Instruction at Mead Park for many years.  Born and raised in Missouri, Dan returns to us after two summers as Head Pro at the Middlesex Club in Darien, and 13 years as the Junior Director at the New Canaan Racquet Club. He grew up playing within the Van der Meer organization out of Hilton Head Island, SC and ended up playing on the nationally-ranked Division II tennis team at Drury University, graduating with a Business Degree. He graduated the Van der Meer Tennis University for tennis teachers and became USPTR-certified. He joined the coaching staff at Van der Meer, coaching alongside the teaching legend Dennis Van der Meer. Dan is currently studying movement technique and efficiency in a program called DMC, and enjoys continuing his education in tennis. Dan welcomes players of all abilities and is excited to share his passion for tennis.
Shane O'Reilly- also no stranger to the New Canaan Tennis, Shane has run the Recreation Fall Youth Instruction for seven years with great success. Shane grew up in Darien, CT and graduated from Tulane University with a degree in history.  Shane is a USPTA certified tennis professional with over 30 years of teaching experience. Shane has held full-time teaching positions at Kings Highway, Shippan and Trumbull Racquet Clubs.  In addition he has been involved in professional tennis working full time a as a sponsorship sales manager at the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament at Yale from 1999-2003.  He has also been a consultant for Tennis Week Magazine and Grand Slam Tennis Tours.

Tiny Tots ages 4-5, Introduction                               
Perfect for kids ready to get a feel for holding racquets, work on balance, and eye coordination. Kid’s use foam red balls and 19” racquets on a 36’ court
Red Ballers ages 5-7, Beginner                         
Entry level class that is great for beginners to advanced beginners. Clinic focuses on continuing to build and develop stronger hand/eye skills, development of top spin on both forehand and backhand ground strokes, appropriate grips, and successful use of footwork. Class uses red balls and 19” – 23” racquets on 36’ court
Orange Smash ages 8-10, Beginner               
Clinic for beginners to intermediate skill levels. Players already have basic knowledge of the game but not play full sets. In this class players continue building athletic skills while refining the skills necessary to serve, rally, and score. Kids use orange balls, play on a 60’ court while using 23 – 25” racquets
Green Gamers ages 10-12, Intermediate
Players with an intermediate skill set who have match skills. Clinic is great for improving strategy in a match based environment by using a rally-based curriculum and focuses on sending and receiving skills, footwork, and racquet mechanics. Class uses green dot balls on a 78” court with 26” & 27” racquets
Varsity ages 12-17                        
Strong players with high intermediate to advanced skill levels who have prior match play experience. Clinic focuses on stroke development, footwork, doubles and singles strategies will all be covered. Class uses both green dot and yellow balls on 78’ court and 27” racquets
