Start Smart Soccer Program - Spring 2019
Start Smart Soccer Program requires all children must not be in the Kindergarten grade and also must be age 4 or older before May 20, 2019.
As an extension to the popular Recreation Soccer Program in the spring, the Recreation Department will be sponsoring this new Start Smart Soccer Program created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports and developed by top motor skill development specialists in the field of youth sports. "Bringing a parent together to spend quality time with their child while learning how to properly teach skills and support them in sports is our main focus. We are excited to bring this type of quality programming to the residents of New Canaan"- Bill Kapp, Assistant Recreation Director.
Start Smart Soccer is a developmentally appropriate introductory soccer program for children 4-5 years old and requires a parent accompany their child for the entire five-week program. The instructional program prepares children and their parents for organized soccer in a fun environment without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Age appropriate soccer equipment from Franklin Sports and Kwik Goal is used to teach kicking, ball control dribbling and receiving, throw-ins and agility. Each week parent-child groups will perform motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence and self-esteem in children while having fun in a safe sports environment.
Start Smart Soccer will be held on Saturday mornings for 5 weeks April 13-May 18 (no class April 20) indoors at the New Canaan High School gymnasium. One class will be offered for a maximum of 32 children from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The cost of the program is $120 per child and includes the cost of equipment issued to each parent: 1 telson soccer ball, 1 size 3 soccer ball, 1 set of shin guards, 4 cones, a participant manual, and a t-shirt. Registration for the program will begin on February 1 online, by mail, or in person at the Recreation Department Office in Waveny House. Contact Bill Kapp at the Recreation Department for further information on the Start Smart Soccer Program.
