Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil and has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation & fire retardant.  Asbestos has been used in a wide range of manufactured goods (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, automotive products, gaskets, coatings, glues, and asbestos cement products. Asbestos is commonly found as pipe wrap and in the mastic of older vinyl floor tiles. Asbestos is regulated by EPA, DPH Asbestos program and DEEP.

The New Canaan Health Department works with these agencies to assure compliance with all local, state, and federal asbestos regulations. Prior to health department approval for any demolition a full asbestos inspection survey with lab results, state demo notication form, and abatement compliance letter are required with a $200 demolition review fee. There are no exceptions or age of structure that excludes asbestos testing since asbestos is still used in products today & not banned in the US.
