Press Release

As of this morning (3/18) CL&P reports 31 “line” crews and 12 tree crews working in New Canaan. There are 475 customers without power (5.6%). CL&P is targeting having all customers restored by the end of today (Thursday). Most of the remaining outages are single customers due to downed wires between house & pole. It is very important to call CL&P at 800-286-2000 to report your outage if you have not done so already.

Homeowners are advised to contact an electrician if the service going up the side of your home was pulled from the structure. CL&P’s responsibility ends at the connection at the “weather head” and will not be able to reactivate your power if there are any defects.

Residents continue to be warned that all downed lines, including service entry cables, must be considered live until removed or made safe by the power company. Caution tape and barriers are placed for their safety.

Town Highway crews have been focusing on opening roads for emergency vehicles. They will be back out to collect residential storm-related brush from 3/17 to 3/25. Please have brush curbside and do not include logs, leaves or grass clippings. Town crews will appreciate placing brush with butt ends facing roadways for easier removal. As can be imagined this is a herculean task due to the amount of damage that has occurred – residents are asked for their cooperation and patience.

Schools have opened today with a 90 minute delay.

Residents needing water can bring containers to the Fire Department on Main Street. If for some reason residents cannot get out, water and food will be delivered by calling New Canaan Human Services at 203-594-3076. Residents are also asked to check in on neighbors who may need special assistance.

Residents needing shower facilities can go to the YMCA at 564 South Ave. Please bring your own supplies (towels, soap, shampoo, etc.)
