Getabout

Getabout's mission is to provide rides within New Canaan to “Seniors and those with special needs," New Canaan's elderly and handicapped. Four vans, three of them with wheel chair capability, operate eight hours a day Monday through Friday. Voluntary contributions of $3.00 per one way ride are suggested to help defray expenses. Rides must be reserved one day in advance by calling 972-7433.

Within New Canaan, transportation is provided to any destination. Favorites are rides to shopping, banks, the YMCA, Lapham Senior Center and a friend’s home. In addition, Getabout provides rides to medical destinations in Stamford and Norwalk including Tully Medical Center, Stamford and Norwalk Hospitals, doctors and dentists offices, therapists and clinics.

Getabout also provides rides to Norwalk Hospital and medical appointments within Norwalk currently paid for by a grant from the State of Connecticut.

Getabout measures its success by the volume of rides it provides to the transportation disadvantaged in New Canaan. In 2009 more than 12,000 rides will be provided. The more rides, the better we serve our community but the greater our operational deficits. For over twenty years, Getabout has remained a viable public transportation service - erasing these operational deficits. Getabout depends on donations from generous residents, the United Way, the New Canaan Community Foundation, Churches, associations, businesses and individuals. Their financial support is necessary to erase operational deficits resultant from the $13.00 gap that exists between ride income and costs.
