Refund Policy

$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.

$25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.

No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

Kindful Mindful Crafting with Mrs. Charkales- new class!

Join Mrs. Charkales in making timeless crafts. The crafts are friendship based. Participants will create personalized items with a  special person in mind. Working in this way encourages selflessness, consideration and thankfulness. Come enjoy some focused down time and learn some of the timeless favorites like friendship bracelets, key chains, beads, etc.

Little Ninjas- new class!

Have you ever wanted to have fun while learning to defend yourself? Well if so, Little Ninjas is the program for you.  During this fun filled hour you will learn how to kick, punch, block, and spar.  You will also learn how to safely break boards using your hands and feet.  Not only will you earn stripes, prizes and points as you go through each session, but you will also have fun through exercise games.  This class will help you learn to improve concentration, listening skills, and discipline.  Every week you will be taught through a fun and safe learning environment.

Club Invention “Passage to Planet ROG”- new class!

A Club Invention module- children travel to a distant Planet ROG and develop a number of different devices to help them solve problems in space and on the planet.  After landing, they build an outpost and create communication, observation, and data-collecting devices.  Next, children meet the inhabitants of Planet ROG, identify and name the inhabitants, and then create sculptures of planet creatures.  After a game of washer mining, children identify and sort mineral deposits.  The mission is completed after creating a way to transport themselves and the minerals back to their spacecraft and home to earth.

Scrapbooking Fun

Create your own scrapbook full of fun memories and share with your friends.  Each week students will use pictures to create pages for their books surrounding different themes (i.e. family, pets, friends, sports, birthdays, vacations).  Bring your own pictures and take home your very own scrapbook on the last day of class.

Sports Variety offers your child an opportunity to let off some steam playing their favorite sports and games with their South School friends.  Classes could include parachute games, touch football, star wars, capture the flag and much more.  Fair competition and sportsmanship will be stressed.

All About Me: Mixed Media Art Journey- new class!
Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

Pop Art techniques, such as decoupage, silk screening, graffiti and optical illusion, will be used to create a mixed media art. Students will make a personal works of art by painting pottery, creating an art journal and using other media in this fun class. Designs will feature lettering, names, hand prints and emojis that will reflect each child's personality.

Stop Motion Tricks and Effects- new class!

 “Wow, how did they do that cool effect”?  In this class we pull back the curtain and reveal how stop-motion movie magic is made. Students learn how to create a variety of effects in their movies including fire effects, water effects, and even how to make characters fly! Working in groups they will film these effects, showcasing their new skill.

MathMania

Math Mania is a great way to spend the afternoon challenging your math and mind!  Students will look for multiplication examples in the real world, learn about ratio while making chocolate crispies, use ruler to create geometrical shapes, make a flip book for place value, play a rapid rounding game to practice this skill, and much more!

Programming with SCRATCH
Grades 2-4; Instructor: Josh MacDonald

Join Mr. MacDonald as he teaches you the basics of programming and game creation using the simple and easy program called "SCRATCH", developed by the MIT Media Institute to create animation, music videos, Pac-Man like games, and more.  You will be designing interactive and fun games and programs that you will be able to play and share!  Using the SCRATCH creator, you will bring your imagination to life on a computer screen!

Snack Attack

Are you ever stuck for healthy snack ideas? Join Ms. Cross and Ms. Horelik as they attack this healthy snack challenge.  We will learn about the Food Pyramid and discuss healthy options for snacks.  We will create a different snack each week and provide the children with the recipes to make the snack for their families at home. Grab your chef hat and join us on Wednesday afternoons.

Origami for Kids- new class!

We will learn to make colorful and fun creations using only a small piece of paper!   Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper.  By the end of the class, you will have learned to make different animals, boxes, shapes, and even Star Wars characters using only origami paper.

Wind Down Yoga

Our fun filled class will focus on stretching, strengthening, and relaxation techniques.  We will talk about ways to be healthy and good to your mind and body.  Our yoga class will be set to music with inspirational quotes and affirmations throughout.  Bring your own yoga mat!

Elementary STEM

In this 10-week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

Who Wants To Be An Engineer
Grades 1-4; Instructor: April Colon

Students will use blocks, legos, play-doh, toothpicks and marshmallows, and other materials to build all types of cool stuff, like wacky sculptures, buildings, towers, cars and more.  Builders will be introduced to engineering, balance, design, color, and more importantly, will explore the art and discover sculptures, paintings, and objects that represent art.

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics
Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

Rad Lab Science

From sparkling snow slime, to exploding pirate treasures, to gem-mining and constellation gazing, join us in the lab this winter for some incredibly unique science discoveries.  Program basic coding to manipulate robots, build an owl viewer, engineer a structure strong enough to defeat the Big Bad Wolf, launch cone flyers, and more in an all-out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

South Chess Club
Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess, Inc.

Join your school chess-mates for a winter of fun matching your skills across the board.  Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.
