Class Times

AM Classes – 7:45-8:45 a.m. Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  Students must be walked into the West School lobby and released to the monitor on duty.  No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted.  Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts.   

PM Classes – 3:35-4:35 p.m. Children will be dismissed by parent car-line only pick-up at the gymnasium.  Parents must provide a photo ID to the monitor.  All children must be signed out.

Late Pick-Up Policy- A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 4:50 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued.

Registration

You have a choice of in-person registration at the New Canaan Recreation Department or on-line registration by computer.  Registration will not be held at the schools and no forms are to be left at the schools.

In-person Registration- Forms for class registrations will be available at the Recreation Office during business hours.  Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.  New residents please bring proof of residency.  All forms must be signed by a parent.  

On-line Registration

Obtaining a username and password In order to access the on-line registration system you must have a username and password.  To obtain a username and password for your family household, you first must be registered in our computer database.  New household registrations will only be established in-person at the Recreation Office in Waveny House.  Proof of residency must be provided in establishing clear residency.

Information Update If the system stops you from registering because of wrong or missing information, you must contact the Recreation Department during office hours for assistance.  Birthdates and school grades must be accurate and may be the first problem that needs to be updated. 

 

 General Information and BASF Policies

Class Times-

7:45-8:45 a.m.- Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  All students must be walked into the West School Lobby and released to the monitor on duty. No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted. Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts.

3:35-4:35 p.m.- Students enrolled in after-school classes must be registered in School Dismissal Manager for each day. Please enter BASF in the driver name and the name & cell number of the person picking the child up in the Describe Activity Box.  Students will automatically be sent directly to the Gymnasium at the end of the school day and grouped by class by the monitor.

Carline/Dismissal Manager- If your child will not be attending After-School Fun on any day, you must indicate on the school carline/dismissal manager “DO NOT SEND TO B/ASF TODAY” along with your dismissal instructions. 

Pick-Up and Late Pick-Up Policy Children will be dismissed from after-school classes at the school gymnasium by carline only. Monitors will greet parents in their cars and all children will be signature released to parents only.  No one other than a legal guardian, your emergency contact indicated on the BASF registration form, or the person indicated on the Dismissal Manager will be allowed to remove the child from the school.  You must present an ID at pick-up. A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 4:55 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued.

Registrations and Wait Lists The registration period for the classes is posted both online.  A class registration minimum and maximum is established.  Classes that do not meet the registration minimum student number will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to the parent.  Late registrations submitted after the class begins will be with the approval of the Program Supervisor. 

No pro-rating of program fees will be allowed.     

Program Monitor A Program Monitor will be on-duty in the main lobby during the B/ASF classes.  The monitor will have a first-aid kit and emergency management book. 

Class Cancellation BOE class cancellations due to school closing, school late opening, or school early dismissal will be sent through the School communications.  The Recreation Department will send out an email notification if a schedule change occurs due to teacher illness, special event conflict, or change of room availability.  On these days, all children enrolled in ASF classes will be sent home the “regular” way.  An automatic adding of a make-up class at the end of the schedule will occur.  THE RECREATION WEBSITE WILL KEEP AN UP-TO-DATE LIST OF CLASSES, INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP DATES ON THE WEBSITE INFORMATION PAGE.

NURSE OFFICE AND NURSE SERVICES CLOSED

The school nurse’s office is not open at any time during the before/after-school fun programs

And school nursing services are not available.  Items stored within the nurse’s office are not accessible during recreation programs

The Recreation Department has staff monitors on duty to initiate first responder care for minor issues and activate emergency procedures for all other situations.  Parent communication is 100% part of all incidents.  Any child that has an allergy or a health condition that requires a prescribed emergency medication is required to deliver an emergency response package to the Recreation staff monitors before the first class.  This will be kept in a location for quick response and held for the 8/10-week session of classes and returned on the last day.  In a zip lock baggie labeled with the child’s name place your epi-pen; benedryl liquid or tablets (if liquid include a measuring cup); detailed instructions of the order of application ie. 1. Benedryl  2. Epi-pen.  This should come from your doctor signed by his office.  Also make sure the expiration dates on the medicine are current. Thank you

Scratch Jr. is an introduction to computer coding.  Students can create their own interactive stories and games.  In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer.

Morning Sports with Ms. G

This class will include free-play basketball and improve technique like dribbling, layups, shooting, and style.  If your student likes basketball or has an interest, this is a good morning class to get them pumped up for the day.

Mindful Monday Yoga for Girls

Grades 2-4; Instructors: Joanna Tamburro and Jennifer Eldredge

Breathe, stretch and get ready for the week ahead with Mrs. Tamburro and Mrs. Eldredge. Shine your light in our mindful community. We will practice fun, challenging and empowering yoga poses to promote self-confidence and positive self-talk. Girls will learn how to focus and center themselves through various breathing and visualization techniques. Each class will include a friendship circle, guided meditation and body awareness. Bring a yoga mat and a joyful attitude.

Quick Start Tennis is designed to introduce children to the game of tennis in a fun and rewarding way.  Equipment and court size is tailored to the needs and abilities of the children.  Tennis racquets are provided and each class will have fundamental skills built into fun games on the court.  A 1/4 coach ratio will be observed in this program.

Drumming Strings- new class!

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Open to Strings students- Spend an hour creating your own drumming story games. Each participant will be able to play bongo drums. The drumming story games will be created by assigning different movements, motions and mime gestures to each particular beat or a pattern. These patterns and beats will be placed together as an underlining story for each game. Participants will then compose/make up violin, viola and cello music to be added to each story game.  All participants can rotate as a music director, choreographer, dancer, actor or a screen writer to create and perform the drumming story games.

Hot Wheels Racing

Grades K-4; Instructor: Tania O’Leary

Ready, set, race!  We’ll transform the classroom into a racetrack and learn how to make our cars go from fast to lightning speed.  You will build tracks out of new materials and customize your very own Hot Wheels car.  Each day we will drive, race, build, and create together to have fun and learn how Hot Wheels can relate to science.

Come join us for a fun filled culinary experience.  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful fall and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include hot chocolate cookie cups, frozen s’mores, melted snowman bark, frozen popcorn snowballs and other delicious treats! Let’s get baking!

The Art of Watercolor- new class!

Join us in this after school class as we nurture students’ creativity through watercolor painting. We will learn basic techniques of watercolor art including dry & wet brush methods, wet on wet painting, color mixing, and even unconventional methods such as raised salt! Students will create a different watercolor painting each week while enjoying a relaxing, creative environment.

Mazes, Motion and Reaction- new class!

Ready, set, go! Come and learn how you can make mazes and contraptions by using toys and basic objects that are lying around! Add a different meaning to your toys purpose! This will be a STEM class, as we learn Rube Goldberg's basic principles and techniques on how to build mazes and contraptions. We will experiment how gravity and motion can cause a chain reaction. We will put our thinking caps on to come up with awesome structures. Little Engineers at work!

Club Invention “Passage to Planet ROG”- new class!

Grade 2-4; Instructor: Michelle Daab

A Club Invention module- children travel to a distant Planet ROG and develop a number of different devices to help them solve problems in space and on the planet.  After landing, they build an outpost and create communication, observation, and data-collecting devices.  Next, children meet the inhabitants of Planet ROG, identify and name the inhabitants, and then create sculptures of planet creatures.  After a game of washer mining, children identify and sort mineral deposits.  The mission is completed after creating a way to transport themselves and the minerals back to their spacecraft and home to earth.

Rad Lab Science

May the centripetal force be with you, as you join us in the lab this winter for some incredibly unique science discoveries!  Turn a splashing cup upside down without getting soaked, make your own bouncy ball, use forensic evidence to solve a mystery, build a dinosaur fossil, harness the power of color changing cabbage juice, engineer a loop-plane, meet a mealworm, and more in an all out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

Coding: Introduction to Python- new class!

Grade 3-4; Instructors: Clint McLeod and Monica Sheehan

Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the Python programming language. This is a class that will elevate the students coding skills from block-based coding (Scratch) to having students, individually writing their own code.  This class will provide opportunities for the students to learn the foundations of coding (variables, functions, if statements) and apply them in their own programs.  The fourth graders that sign up do not need to have any prior coding experience but should be willing to be able to work through difficult concepts.  The format of the class is less like a club and more like a serious academic class.

Newspaper Club

Written, published and distributed by our reporters, the reporters will be creating articles fact or fiction, poetry, and original drawings for our school newspaper.  Reporters will use various technologies such as: digital cameras, scanners, and software (MS Word, Tux Paint, and MS Publisher) to create the West Weekly.  The newspaper is such a fine communication tool for the West community.

Strings Band

Open to Strings students- Make up your own music and explore the basics of jazz improvisation!  The band members will be able to use the bongo drums to add to their compositions.  Create your own theater games and use question-and-answer composition/improvisation technique to make up your own tunes. At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends. Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band.

Spread kindness throughout your day and your school by being a “kindness ambassador”.  We are going to use IPads and paint to create posters, and brainstorm to create a school wide kindness project.  Your efforts will benefit the West School community and spread to your family, friends and neighbors.

Creative Drawing with Ms. G

Exploring the fundamentals of drawing using pens, pencils, charcoal, pastels, and our creative and imaginative minds. Learning the basics of shapes, shading, and defining lines. It’s a free draw for your student to explore their passion in the world of art.

Chess Wizards

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess, Inc.

Join your school chessmates for a fall of fun matching your skills across the board.  Beginner Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.  Students at the intermediate level will be grouped to learn at a higher level playing against more competitive opponents and advanced strategies.

STEM Lab- new class!

Grades 1-2; Instructor: Brianna Curcio

Students will apply the use of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by creating projects that make connections with real world work and experiences. The students will be working in small groups or partners to create. There will be projects such as building bridges and creating budgets using money to buy their materials. There will also be instances where students will be able to manipulate a real world scientific occurrence like the earth’s rotation around the sun using technology, spheres, pencils as axis, and a flashlight.

Sports Variety K-1

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 2-4; Instructor: CompuChild

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. Students who are in grades 3-4 and/or those who have taken this program before will be placed in the Advanced Robotics Class.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.
