Refund Policy

$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.

$25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.

No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

Jedi Karate

Students will enjoy obstacle courses, team challenges, themed games and Martial Arts fun! Our program will focus on a blend of fitness, strength and conditioning, agility and martial arts based games and activities. Participants will gain confidence, self-control, and group camaraderie. For students new to Kempo Academy, a karate belt will be provided.

Stop Motion Tricks and Effects- new class!

“Wow, how did they do that cool effect”?  In this class we pull back the curtain and reveal how stop-motion movie magic is made. Students learn how to create a variety of effects in their movies including fire effects, water effects, and even how to make characters fly! Working in groups they will film these effects, showcasing their new skill.

Kindergarten Chess

Come learn the basics of how to play the most popular game in the world.  It is a game that is fun for all ages.  This game will not only help build your mental skill, but your social skills as well.  You will learn the names of each chess piece, how each chess piece moves, opening game strategy, and rules of the game.  This class is for students who have not played chess before.

Art From The Heart- new class!

If you love crafts, come and show off your creative side! Learn how to make dream catchers, emboss/monogram your notebooks, decorate a picture frame and add an extra flair to your art projects. In this class you will learn lots of crafty techniques and create may beautiful projects that you can enjoy yourself or give as gifts. Each week will be a different project.

Calling all reporters, photographers, artists, and editors! Come put your talents together to create our own East School newspaper. Together, everyone will decide on a name for our newspaper, choose topics for articles, conduct interviews, take photos, and select other features to include in our final published newspaper. All features will be compiled together on computers, where you will have practice editing and formatting the pages. Our newspaper will be distributed to all East School teachers to share with the entire East School community!

The Chess Club is designed for the student who wants to advance their skills to a more competitive level.  Beginners through advanced players, all students will receive chess packets with level appropriate chess puzzles.  Learn to record your chess moves and then analyze your games with Grandmaster strength software.  Have fun recording your games and playing chess with digital clocks!

Math Olympiads- new class!

This program is for self-motivated students who want to challenge themselves.  Join the team as we participate for the first time in the Math Olympiads!  The goals of the program are to stimulate enthusiasm and love for mathematics; introduce important mathematical concepts; teach major strategies for problem solving; develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems; foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity; provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges.  The class will be entering monthly Olympiad contests and competing against students around the world.  More information about the program is available on www.moems.org

Elementary STEM

In this 10- week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

Beginner Tennis- new class!

Beginner Tennis is designed to introduce children to the game of tennis in a fun and rewarding way.  Equipment and court size is tailored to the needs and abilities of the children.  Tennis racquets are provided and each class will have fundamental skills built into fun games on the court.  A 1/4 coach ratio will be observed in this program.

Rad Lab Science

From sparkling snow slime, to exploding pirate treasures, to gem-mining and constellation gazing, join us in the lab this winter for some incredibly unique science discoveries.  Program basic coding to manipulate robots, build an owl viewer, engineer a structure strong enough to defeat the Big Bad Wolf, launch cone flyers, and more in an all out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

All About Me: Mixed Media Art Journey- new class!
Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

Pop Art techniques, such as decoupage, silk screening, graffiti and optical illusion, will be used to create a mixed media art. Students will make a personal works of art by painting pottery, creating an art journal and using other media in this fun class. Designs will feature lettering, names, hand prints and emojis that will reflect each child's personality.

Cupcake War and More

Do you LOVE to decorate cupcakes and can’t wait to learn some great new techniques?  Have you ever wondered how to make those adorable snowman cupcakes?  Would you love to wow your friends and family with beautiful Valentine’s Day cupcakes you made yourself?
Join instructors from New Canaan’s own- My Cupcake Party for a new and exciting 100% hands-on cupcake decorating class.  Your budding baker will create 4 adorable, seasonally themed cupcakes to bring home each week. Students will learn basic decorating and frosting techniques, while also learning ways to turn every day foods into simple and unique decorating ingredients!  Some of the cupcake designs will include winter snow globes, Valentine’s Day treats, St. Patrick’s Day designs, Easter Bunnies and spring flowers.  Each week students will also have time for a “Cupcake War” where they will create 2 “freestyle” cupcakes designs of their very own.  This class will provide all pre- baked cupcakes, decorations, and supplies.

Come join us for a fun filled culinary experience.  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful winter and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include hot chocolate cookie cups, frozen s’mores, melted snowman bark, frozen popcorn snowballs and other delicious treats.

Yoga

Yoga is a discipline that can lead students in route toward a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them build a strong and flexible body.  Students will explore yoga poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation in a fun and calming environment. We will be storytelling and allowing creative expression. Creative expression will be encouraged in this class. We will move and learn to stretch our bodies in new creative ways. Through yoga poses, games, activities, music and stories, we will promote strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will help to teach better focus, relaxation and self-control.  Each student is responsible for providing a personal yoga mat for the class.

Strings Band
Grade 3-4; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Students will become comfortable expressing themselves using the universal language of music.  Using the simple tunes, students will explore the basics of jazz improvisation.  Beginning with the spoken dialogue, call and response and question-and-answer technique students will learn how to make up simple tunes of their own.  At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends.  Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band.
