Class Times

AM Classes – 7:45-8:45 a.m. Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  Also- students must be walked into the East School lobby and released to the monitor on duty.  No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted.  Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds or gymnasium until school starts.  PM Classes – 3:45-4:45 p.m. Students will automatically be sent to after-school programs at the end of the school day.  Pick-up: Children will gather and wait for parents in the gymnasium.  Monitors will greet parents at the school side door at dismissal time and all children must be signed out by their parent.  All parents must present ID.

Registration

You have a choice of in-person registration at the New Canaan Recreation Department or on-line registration by computer.  Registration will not be held at the schools and no forms are to be left at the schools.

In-person Registration- Forms for class registrations will be available at the Recreation Office during business hours.  Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.  New residents please bring proof of residency.  All forms must be signed by a parent.

Obtaining a username and password

In order to access the on-line registration system you must have a username and password.  To obtain a username and password for your family household, you first must be registered in our computer database.  New household registrations will only be established in-person at the Recreation Office in Waveny House.  Proof of residency must be provided in establishing clear residency.

Information Update

If the system stops you from registering because of wrong or missing information, you must contact the Recreation Department during office hours for assistance.  Birthdates and school grades must be accurate and may be the first problem that needs to be updated. 

General Information and BASF Policies

Class Times-

7:45-8:45 a.m.- Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  All students must be walked into the East School Lobby and released to the monitor on duty. No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted. Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts.

3:45-4:45 p.m.- Students will automatically be sent directly to the Galley at the end of the school day and grouped by class by the monitor. Dismissal Manager- If your child will not be attending After-School Fun on any day, you must indicate on the school dismissal manager “DO NOT SEND TO B/ASF TODAY” along with your dismissal instructions. 

Pick-Up and Late Pick-Up Policy Children will be dismissed from after-school classes at the school gymnasium. Monitors will greet parents in the hallway and all children will be signature released to parents only.  You must present an ID at pick-up. A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 5:00 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued.

Registrations and Wait Lists The registration period for the classes is posted both online.  A class registration minimum and maximum is established.  Classes that do not meet the registration minimum student number will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to the parent.  Late registrations submitted after the class begins will be with the approval of the Program Supervisor. 

No pro-rating of program fees will be allowed.     

Program Monitor A Program Monitor will be on-duty in the main lobby during the B/ASF classes.  The monitor will have a first-aid kit and emergency management book. 

Class Cancellation BOE class cancellations due to school closing, school late opening, or school early dismissal will be sent through the School communications.  The Recreation Department will send out an email notification if a schedule change occurs due to teacher illness, special event conflict, or change of room availability.  On these days, all children enrolled in ASF classes will be sent home the “regular” way.  An automatic adding of a make-up class at the end of the schedule will occur.  THE RECREATION WEBSITE WILL KEEP AN UP-TO-DATE LIST OF CLASSES, INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP DATES ON THE WEBSITE INFORMATION PAGE.

NURSE OFFICE AND NURSE SERVICES CLOSED

The school nurse’s office is not open at any time during the before/after-school fun programs

And school nursing services are not available.  Items stored within the nurse’s office are not accessible during recreation programs

The Recreation Department has staff monitors on duty to initiate first responder care for minor issues and activate emergency procedures for all other situations.  Parent communication is 100% part of all incidents.  Any child that has an allergy or a health condition that requires a prescribed emergency medication is required to deliver an emergency response package to the Recreation staff monitors before the first class.  This will be kept in a location for quick response and held for the 8/10-week session of classes and returned on the last day.  In a zip lock baggie labeled with the child’s name place your epi-pen; benedryl liquid or tablets (if liquid include a measuring cup); detailed instructions of the order of application ie. 1. Benedryl  2. Epi-pen.  This should come from your doctor signed by his office.  Also make sure the expiration dates on the medicine are current. Thank you

Flag Football has become a fun way to play football without the contact and fear of injury.  Special game rules have flag belts with flags to pull to end the play.  Running, passing, interceptions, touchdowns all fun in the gym.

It’s Game Time- new class!

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Jennifer Klemm

Do you enjoy playing games? Then come join us as we play a wide variety of types of games...board games, card games, yard games, strategy games, and more! We’ll explore the history of games around the world a bit and try out some games that children in other areas of the world play. You’ll even have a chance to create a game show and your own board game. Bring your love of games along with you and you’ll leave with some new ideas of games to play with your friends and family!

Chess Wizards

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess Inc.

The Chess Wizards is designed for the student who wants to advance their skills to a more competitive level.  Beginners through advanced players, all students will receive chess packets with level appropriate chess puzzles.  Learn to record your chess moves and then analyze your games with Grandmaster strength software.  Have fun recording your games and playing chess with digital clocks!

Coding: Introduction to Python

Grade 3-4; Instructor: Clint McLeod, District Technology Integrator

Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the Python programming language. This is a class that will elevate the students coding skills from block-based coding (Scratch) to having students, individually writing their own code.  This class will provide opportunities for the students to learn the foundations of coding (variables, functions, if statements) and apply them in their own programs.  The fourth graders that sign up do not need to have any prior coding experience but should be willing to be able to work through difficult concepts.  The format of the class is less like a club and more like a serious academic class.

Elementary STEM

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

In this 10- week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

Quick Start Tennis- new class!

Grades 1-2; Instructors:  Shane O’Reilly & Staff

Quick Start Tennis is designed to introduce children to the game of tennis in a fun and rewarding way.  Equipment and court size is tailored to the needs and abilities of the children.  Tennis racquets are provided and each class will have fundamental skills built into fun games on the court.  A 1/4 coach ratio will be observed in this program.

East School Newspaper

Calling all reporters, photographers, artists, and editors! Come put your talents together to create our own East School newspaper. Together, everyone will decide on a name for our newspaper, choose topics for articles, conduct interviews, take photos, and select other features to include in our final published newspaper. All features will be compiled together on computers, where you will have practice editing and formatting the pages. Our newspaper will be distributed to all East School teachers to share with the entire East School community!

Sports Variety K-1

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructor: Jenn Moore

May the centripetal force be with you, as you join us in the lab this winter for some incredibly unique science discoveries!  Turn a splashing cup upside down without getting soaked, make your own bouncy ball, use forensic evidence to solve a mystery, build a dinosaur fossil, harness the power of color changing cabbage juice, engineer a loop-plane, meet a mealworm, and more in an all out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

Yoga

Grades 1-4; Instructors: Chelsea Celentano and Emma Kong

Yoga is a discipline that can lead students in route toward a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them build a strong and flexible body.  Students will explore yoga poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation in a fun and calming environment. We will be storytelling and allowing creative expression. Creative expression will be encouraged in this class. We will move and learn to stretch our bodies in new creative ways. Through yoga poses, games, activities, music and stories, we will promote strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will help to teach better focus, relaxation and self-control.  Each student is responsible for providing a personal yoga mat for the class.

Kids Can Cook Too

Come join us for a fun filled culinary experience.  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful winter and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include creamy melted snowman bark, crunchy blizzard cookies, sweet bunny cupcakes and other delicious treats.  Let’s get baking!

Strings Band

Grade 3-4; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Open to Strings Students- Make up your own music and explore the basics of jazz improvisation!  The band members will be able to use the bongo drums to add to their compositions.  Create your own theater games and use question-and-answer composition/improvisation technique to make up your own tunes. At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends. Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band.
