SOUTH SCHOOL

2017 DECEMBER 5, 6, 7, 8 TEACHER CONFERENCE DAY CLASSES

All classes are open to grades K-4

Classes are enrolled per day, not for the entire week

All classes will be held 12:15-2:15 p.m. at South School. Parent Pick-up at 2:15 p.m. in the Gymnasium.  No refunds on class registrations.

 

Registration begins Monday, November 6 (9:15 am)

November 6-10…. Registration restriction of one class per child

November 11-26…. Open registration for additional classes

 

Register online on the Recreation website www.newcanaan.info (username and password needed) or at the Recreation Department.  Payment is due at the time of registration.  Parents- prompt pick-up at 2:15 p.m. for all programs is requested in the gym- personal photo ID is required to be presented by the adult at pick-up.      

 

"LEGO LOVE" (This class is held on Wednesday or Friday ONLY)

Lego Love consists of building LEGO creations each class.  While building creations with other students, they are also being introduced to different life skills such as negotiation, communication, self-pride, creativity, public speaking, and tolerance.  The students work together in groups of 3-5 to build one creation per group.   The creations are then dismantled and put back in the storage bins by the instructors. Class Fee: $30 (Min 12/Max 20)

OVERTIME ATHLETICS: "SPORTS VARIETY" (Available all 4 days)

Participants will practice skills and play games in both traditional sports and playground favorites.  Basketball, Soccer, Flag Football, Kickball, Capture the Flag, Whiffle Ball, Bump and Bite, Knights and Dragons, Numbers Game, Tag Games, Safe Base and More.  Overtime Athletics covers all the bases and our emphasis on playing, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Class Fee: $30 (Min 13/Max 20)

NEW CANAAN ART & SOUL: "HOLIDAY SURPRISE” (This class is offered Tuesday ONLY)

Get in the mood for winter fun by painting your very own festive pottery snowman stack to display throughout the season.  Dress your snowmen in bright colors and use sparkly paints to make them shine.  Each will be unique and special because it’s yours.  Pottery will be fired at Art & Soul, then returned to school for pick-up. Class fee: $30 (Min 10/Max 12)

NEW CANAAN ART & SOUL: "HOLIDAY SURPRISE” (This class is offered Friday ONLY)

“Holiday Cookie Plates” Paint a unique seasonal cookie plate to show off your holiday treats!  We will have lots of fun designs to work with including trees, penguins, polar bears and snowmen.  Bring your imagination and make a one of a kind treasure to use for years to come.  Pottery will be fired at Art & Soul, then returned to school for pick-up. Class fee: $30 (Min 10/Max 12)

RAD LAB SCIENCE QUEST: ENGINEERING EXPO! (This class is offered Tuesday ONLY)

Challenge accepted!  Join Rad Lab in a quest to conquer a plethora of engineering challenges, from building an unsinkable boat, to creating the farthest reaching catapult. Young scientists will attempt to build a break-proof capsule for a sky-diving egg, create a bridge that can withstand tremendous force, and even build their own self-drawing Art-Bot.  Bring your creativity, and join in the Engineering Expo! Class fee: $30 (Min 12/Max 15)                               

 MAD SCIENCE OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY: “OPTICAL ILLUSIONS” AND “WATTS-UP” (Available all 4 days)

Optical Illusions- children will work against their eyes! Optical illusions will trick their brain with lines and coils. Children will discover how mirrors and their reflections can play tricks on what they see. They will attempt to touch a mirage. Students will make periscopes to see above and beyond. Watts-Up- this electrifying class will wow students! They will learn what causes lightning as they study static electricity. Their hair will stand on end and packing peanuts will fly from their hands with help from a Van De Graff generator.  Class Fee: $30 (Min 15/Max 15)
