Chorus

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Michael Messina

Come join the South School Chorus!  Each week students will work on developing their singing skills while learning a wide variety of songs including broadway, pop, classical, jazz, and patriotic songs.  Students will also develop their music theory and music reading skills beyond what they are learning in their weekly music classes.  At the end of the session, the chorus will perform a concert showcasing songs they have learned. Class Fee: $175 (Min 12/Max 20)

Beginner SPHERO- The Robotic Ball

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara

SPHERO is incredible technology using a robot ball…“the APP-enabled ball that does it all”.  Students will work together as partners to control SPHERO with a school supplied iPad and programming will give their robot orders and visual blocks representing code.  They will be able to see an instant connection between their program and how the SPHERO robot reacts to their code.  SPHERO will ignite a love of robotics, coding, and STEM principals all through play. Class Fee: $253 (Min 6/Max 8)

Strings Band

Grade 3; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Students will become comfortable expressing themselves using the universal language of music.  Using the simple tunes, students will explore the basics of jazz improvisation.  Beginning with the spoken dialogue, call and response and question-and-answer technique students will learn how to make up simple tunes of their own.  At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends.  Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band. Class fee: $200 (Min 6/Max 20)

Sports Variety K-1

Sports Variety offers your child an opportunity to let off some steam playing their favorite sports and games with their South School friends.  Classes could include parachute games, touch football, star wars, capture the flag and more.  Fair competition/sportsmanship will be stressed. Class Fee: $210 (Min 10/Max 24)

The World of Pinkalicious- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructors: April Colon and Kathy Bishop

Author Victoria Kann has created a series of “Lious” books.  Some titles include, “Pinkalicious, Purplicious, Silverlicious, and Goldilicious”.  In each of these stories the characters partake on a variety of exciting adventures.  During this program we will dive into the world of Pinkalicious.  We will make elegant tiaras, sparkling jewelry, beautiful purses, and more.  We will have a tea party and dress  up in our favorite colors, while having adventures of our own.  Class fee: $222 (Min 10/Max 20)

Crafty Cooks- new class!

What better way to end your school day…. crafting & creating tasty treats with your friends! If you love crafts then this is the class for you as we’ll be making charm tag bracelets, flower fairies, sewing and much more. You’ll also learn to decorate your own mini cake using forcing bag techniques, make fun themed cupcakes and “paint” cookies. Class fee: $215 (Min 8/Max 10)

Scrapbooking

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Laura Barbosa

Create your own scrapbook full of fun memories and share with your friends.  Each week students will use pictures to create pages for their books surrounding different themes (i.e. family, pets, friends, sports, birthdays, vacations).  Bring your own pictures and take home your very own scrapbook on the last day of class. Class fee: $198 (Min 8/Max 12)

Video Animation Gaming

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Josh MacDonald

Join Mr. MacDonald as he teaches you the basics of programming and game creation using the simple and easy program called "SCRATCH", developed by the MIT Media Institute to create animation, music videos, Pac-Man like games, and more.  You will be designing interactive and fun games and programs that you will be able to play and share!  Using the SCRATCH creator, you will bring your imagination to life on a computer screen!  Class Fee: $190 (Min 8/Max 20)

MathMania- new class!

Math Mania is a great way to spend the afternoon challenging your math and mind!  Students will look for multiplication examples in the real world, learn about ratio while making chocolate crispies, use ruler to create geometrical shapes, make a flip book for place value, play a rapid rounding game to practice this skill, and much more!Class fee: $190 (Min 8/Max 12)

Elementary STEM- new class!

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

In this 10 week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

Snap Circuits- new class!

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Karen Pedicano

Children will be using Snap Circuits to make over 300 electronic devices.  It's easy and fun!  They will follow the colorful pictures and build exciting projects such as AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, propellers, lights, generators, and much more!! They will be able to play electronic games with their friends. All parts are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. Enjoy hours of fun while learning about electronics. No tools required. Class Fee: $300 (Min 4/Max 6)

Snack Attack

Grades K-1; Instructors: Cori Horelik and Carli Cross

Are you ever stuck for healthy snack ideas? Join Ms. Horelik and Mrs. Cross as they attack this healthy snack challenge.  We will learn about the Food Pyramid and discuss healthy options for snacks.  We will create a different snack each week and provide the children with the recipes to make the snack for their families at home. Grab your chef hat and join us on Wednesday afternoons. Food allergy alert- We will screen the food used in this class but may involve foods with nut products, gluten and or prepared in a facility where present. Ham and Cheese Roll Ups, Homemade Pita Chips, Veggies and Ranch Dip, Applesauce Muffins, Vanilla Yogurt Parfait, Cinnamon Chips and Fruit Salsa, Popcorn-Banana Munch Mix, Fruit Waffle Sundae, Apple S’mores, Fruit Cones, Fresh Fruit IceClass Fee: $269 (Min 9/Max 12)

Who Wants to Be an Engineer- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructor: April Colon

Students will use blocks, legos, play-doh, toothpicks and marshmallows, and other materials to build all types of cool stuff, like wacky sculptures, buildings, towers, cars and more.  Builders will be introduced to engineering, balance, design, color, and more importantly, will explore the art and discover sculptures, paintings, and objects that represent art. Class Fee: $200 (Min 8/Max 20)

Wind Down Yoga- new class!

Grades K-4; Instructors: Laura Barbosa and Elysa DeMartini

Our fun filled class will focus on various stretching, strengthening, and relaxation techniques.  We will talk about ways to be healthy and good to your mind and body.  Our yoga class will be set to music with inspirational quotes and affirmations throughout.  Bring your own yoga mat! Class Fee: $265 (Min 8/Max 18)

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructors: Rad Lab Teachers

Join us in the lab this winter to investigate dandelion helicopters, parachutes, rainbow rainstorms, bird beak races, fizzy dough, and more!  Build the strongest bridge, race water droplets, create your own kazoo, and make a winter bird feeder.  Through fast paced, hands-on investigations, scientists will encounter biology, chemistry, physics and beyond!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!  Class Fee: $366 (Min 12/Max 15)

Chess Club

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess, Inc.

Join your school chess-mates for a winter of fun matching your skills across the board.  Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.  Class fee: $180 (Min 8/Max 22)

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6 (This class will not meet on 2/23, 3/23)

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. Students who are in grades 3-4 and/or those who have taken this program before will be placed in the Advanced Robotics Class.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program. Class fee: $212 (Min 7/Max 14)

Creative Drama

Grades 3-4; Instructor:  Jennifer Bennhoff

Creative Drama for third and fourth graders will encourage students to tap into their imaginations while increasing self-confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking. This class is designed for all types of personalities, whether outgoing or timid, and students will find new ways to express themselves through fun and creative games, puppetry, pantomime and improvisation. Unlike with traditional theatre classes, there is no pressure to perform in a creative drama class. Students can explore at their own pace and will learn ways to interact socially and become thoughtful, analytical audience members. Units will focus on identifying and creating characters, storytelling, acting as individuals, and collaborating in teams to bring stories to life. There will also be no shortage of laughter. Class fee: $190 (Min 8/Max 15)
