Refund Policy

$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.

$25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.

No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

The school nurse’s office is not open at any time during the before/after-school fun programs

Fall STEAM Ahead- new class!

Do you like science projects?  We will explore changes in matter and color.  We will make lava lamps, fairy jars, and slime.  We will also grow geodes, rock candy, and paint with salt.

Beginner Sphero, The Robotic Ball- new class!  CANCELLED

SPHERO is incredible technology using a robot ball…“the APP-enabled ball that does it all”.  Students will work together as partners to control SPHERO with a school supplied iPad and programming will give their robot orders and visual blocks representing code.  They will be able to see an instant connection between their program and how the SPHERO robot reacts to their code.  SPHERO will ignite a love of robotics, coding, and STEM principals all through play.

Outrageous Obstacles Just For Kids

Grade 1-4; Instructor: April Colon

Outrageous Obstacles are adventurous activities that are fun for all ages.  These obstacles help build confidence while promoting a sense of excitement for fitness.  They help improve gross motor skills, coordination, balance and overall development.  Some obstacles include balancing, crawling, jumping, reaching and tossing, and walking and weaving.  Children get to go at your own pace and finish whenever you finish.  The obstacles change every week so come join the fun and try some outrageous obstacles.

Fall In Love with Fall- Art & Soul

Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

In this fun art class, we will create original projects that celebrate Fall, including colorful leaves, Halloween, pumpkins and Thanksgiving.  We will work with clay, paint pottery, decoupage and create mixed media projects to make decorative seasonal artworks that can be displayed for years to come.

Scrapbooking Fun  CANCELLED

Grades 1-4; Instructors: Laura Barbosa and Jenna DiRocco

Create your own scrapbook full of fun memories and share with your friends.  Each week students will use pictures to create pages for their books surrounding different themes (i.e. family, pets, friends, sports, birthdays, vacations).  Bring your own pictures and take home your very own scrapbook on the last day of class.

Sports Variety K-1

Sports Variety offers your child an opportunity to let off some steam playing their favorite sports and games with their South School friends.  Classes could include parachute games, touch football, star wars, capture the flag and much more.  Fair competition and sportsmanship will be stressed.

Hot Wheels Racing

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Laura Barbosa

Ready, set, race!  We’ll transform the classroom into a racetrack and learn how to make our cars go from fast to lightning speed.  You will build tracks out of new materials and customize your very own Hot Wheels car.  Each day we will drive, race, build, and create together to have fun and learn how Hot Wheels can relate to science.

Programming with SCRATCH

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Josh MacDonald

Join Mr. MacDonald as he teaches you the basics of programming and game creation using the simple and easy program called "SCRATCH", developed by the MIT Media Institute to create animation, music videos, Pac-Man like games, and more.  You will be designing interactive and fun games and programs that you will be able to play and share!  Using the SCRATCH creator, you will bring your imagination to life on a computer screen!

MathMania

Grades K-1; Instructor: Karen Pedicano

Math Mania is a great way to spend the afternoon challenging your math and mind!  Students will look for multiplication examples in the real world, learn about ratio while making chocolate crispies, use ruler to create geometrical shapes, make a flip book for place value, play a rapid rounding game to practice this skill, and much more!

Art with Famous Artists CANCELLED

A little art history with a whole lot of fun.  In each class the student is introduced to a famous artist through a discussion, visual aids, and a hands-on activity. Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Henri Matisse, and others will be discussed. The eight week session would include working with paint, collage, and sculpture medium.

Snack Attack

Are you ever stuck for healthy snack ideas? Join Ms. Cross and Ms. Horelik as they attack this healthy snack challenge.  We will learn about the Food Pyramid and discuss healthy options for snacks.  We will create a different snack each week and provide the children with the recipes to make the snack for their families at home. Grab your chef hat and join us on Wednesday afternoons.

Origami for Kids  CANCELLED

We will learn to make colorful and fun creations using only a small piece of paper!   Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper.  By the end of the class, you will have learned to make different animals, boxes, shapes, and even Star Wars characters using only origami paper.

SEW Much Fun (Sewing)

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Lee Ann Mistretta

We will teach your child a skill that will last a lifetime.  Not only will they learn to thread a needle, sew on buttons, learn stitches and what they are used for, but will also create fun projects such as hand warmers, button trees, bookmarks, pillows and more.  Hand sewing is not only fun but also helps kids to develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

Who Wants To Be An Engineer

Grades 1-4; Instructor: April Colon

Students will use blocks, legos, play-doh, toothpicks and marshmallows, and other materials to build all types of cool stuff, like wacky sculptures, buildings, towers, cars and more.  Builders will be introduced to engineering, balance, design, color, and more importantly, will explore the art and discover sculptures, paintings, and objects that represent art.

Elementary STEM

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

In this 8-week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

Flag Football  CANCELLED

Flag Football has become a fun way to play football without the contact and fear of injury.  Special game rules have flag belts with flags to pull to end the play.  Running, passing, interceptions, touchdowns all fun on the grass playground field.

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructor: Jenn Moore

From mysterious moon sand, to exploding chalk goop, to air vortex cannons and reaction rockets, join us in the lab this fall for some incredibly unique science discoveries.  Engineer a tower to withstand the Wrecking Ball Challenge, transform into a pollinating bee, make a rainbow disappear, and more, in an all-out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

South Chess Club

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess, Inc.

9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8

Join your school chess-mates for a winter of fun matching your skills across the board.  Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.
