Refund Policy

$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.

$25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.

No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

The school nurse’s office is not open at any time during the before/after-school fun programs

School nursing services are not available during recreation programs

Kindergarten Chess CANCELLED

Come learn the basics of how to play the most popular game in the world.  It is a game that is fun for all ages.  This game will not only help build your mental skill, but your social skills as well.  You will learn the names of each chess piece, how each chess piece moves, opening game strategy, and rules of the game.  This class is for students who have not played chess before.

East Chess Club

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess Inc.

The Chess Club is designed for the student who wants to advance their skills to a more competitive level.  Beginners through advanced players, all students will receive chess packets with level appropriate chess puzzles.  Learn to record your chess moves and then analyze your games with Grandmaster strength software.  Have fun recording your games and playing chess with digital clocks!

TUESDAY AFTERNOONS 3:45-4:45 p.m.********************

3 v 3 Basketball- new class!

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Tom Taliercio

Have fun with friends after-school in a weekly tournament of 3v3 basketball with Mr. Taliercio.  Both girls and boys will be active in learning how to play the game of basketball and be able to play team games in a tournament format.  Children will be in a fun supportive environment where everyone gets to play and develop basketball skills.

Elementary STEM

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

In this course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13(This class will not meet 11/6)

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

Braids & Beads- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructor:  Chelsea Celentano

Braids and Beads will use your imagination and fine motor ability to create individualized jewelry.  Classes will introduce students to basic techniques used for jewelry assembly and design.  This class will be engaging, tactile and a rewarding experience for students to tap into their creative mind while constructing beautiful and wearable beaded jewelry and accessories.

East School Newspaper

Calling all reporters, photographers, artists, and editors! Come put your talents together to create our own East School newspaper. Together, everyone will decide on a name for our newspaper, choose topics for articles, conduct interviews, take photos, and select other features to include in our final published newspaper. All features will be compiled together on computers, where you will have practice editing and formatting the pages. Our newspaper will be distributed to all East School teachers to share with the entire East School community!

Sports Variety 1-2

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructor: Jenn Moore

From mysterious moon sand, to exploding chalk goop, to air vortex cannons and reaction rockets, join us in the lab this fall for some incredibly unique science discoveries.  Engineer a tower to withstand the Wrecking Ball Challenge, transform into a pollinating bee, make a rainbow disappear, and more, in an all-out STEM frenzy of fun!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!

Yoga

Grades 1-4; Instructors: Chelsea Celentano and Emma Kong

Yoga is a discipline that can lead students in route toward a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them build a strong and flexible body.  Students will explore yoga poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation in a fun and calming environment. We will be storytelling and allowing creative expression. Creative expression will be encouraged in this class. We will move and learn to stretch our bodies in new creative ways. Through yoga poses, games, activities, music and stories, we will promote strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will help to teach better focus, relaxation and self-control.  Each student is responsible for providing a personal yoga mat for the class.

Nature Crafters- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Bartlett Arboretum Staff

Nature and art are combined in this STEAM-based program that gives young learners the opportunity to get creative while investigating and learning about different plants, animals, and habitats found in nature.

Kids Can Cook Too

Come join us for a fun-filled culinary experience! Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful fall and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include sweet apple pie bites, delicious pumpkin patch bars, spooky witch hats, adorable turkey bites and other scrumptious treats!

Fall in Love with Fall- Art & Soul- new class!

Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

In this fun art class, we will create original projects that celebrate Fall, including colorful leaves, Halloween, pumpkins and Thanksgiving.  We will work with clay, paint pottery, decoupage and create mixed media projects to make decorative seasonal artworks that can be displayed for years to come.

Coding: Introduction to Python- new class!

Grade 4; Instructor: Clint McLeod, District Technology Integrator

The fourth graders will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the Python programming language.  This is a class that will elevate the students coding skills from block-based coding (Scratch) to having students, individually writing their own code.  This class will provide opportunities for the students to learn the foundations of coding (variables, functions, if statements) and apply them in their own programs.  The fourth graders that sign up do not need to have any prior coding experience but should be willing to be able to work through difficult concepts.  The format of the class is less like a club and more like a serious academic class.
