Refund Policy

$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class.

$25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class.

No refunds will be issued after the class starts.

No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

Jedi Karate

Grade 1-3; Instructor: Kempo Academy of New Canaan

9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6

Students will enjoy obstacle courses, team challenges, themed games and Martial Arts fun! Our program will focus on a blend of fitness, strength and conditioning, agility and martial arts based games and activities. Participants will gain confidence, self-control, and group camaraderie. For students new to Kempo Academy, a karate belt will be provided.

Kindergarten Chess

Grades K; Instructors: Tom Dempsey and Steve Dayton

9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6

Come learn the basics of how to play the most popular game in the world.  It is a game that is fun for all ages.  This game will not only help build your mental skill, but your social skills as well.  You will learn the names of each chess piece, how each chess piece moves, opening game strategy, and rules of the game.  This class is for students who have not played chess before.

East School Newspaper

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Mary Fisher

Calling all reporters, photographers, artists, and editors! Come put your talents together to create our own East School newspaper. Together, everyone will decide on a name for our newspaper, choose topics for articles, conduct interviews, take photos, and select other features to include in our final published newspaper. All features will be compiled together on computers, where you will have practice editing and formatting the pages. Our newspaper will be distributed to all East School teachers to share with the entire East School community!

East Chess Club

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess Inc.

9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14 (This class will not meet 11/7)

The Chess Club is designed for the student who wants to advance their skills to a more competitive level.  Beginners through advanced players, all students will receive chess packets with level appropriate chess puzzles.  Learn to record your chess moves and then analyze your games with Grandmaster strength software.  Have fun recording your games and playing chess with digital clocks!

TUESDAY AFTERNOONS 3:45-4:45 p.m.**********************************

Elementary STEM

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21 (This class will not meet 10/31 & 11/7)

In this 8 week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21 (This class will not meet 10/31 & 11/7)

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS 3:45-4:45 p.m.*******************************

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructor: Jenn Moore

9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8

Join us in the lab this fall to explore!  Create your own lava lamp, make gummy bears grow, investigate thermochromic gadgets, uncover the secrets of optical illusions, build Cartesian divers, and more.  Through fast paced, hands-on investigations, scientists will encounter biology, chemistry, physics and beyond.  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and a lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation.

Class Fee: $260 (Min 10/Max 15)

 

Sports Variety 3-4

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Chris Sangalli

9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8

Join your friends for your favorite after school games in a fun and supportive environment!  Both girls and boys will enjoy the opportunity to be active playing kickball, capture the flag, soccer, baseball and many others.  Note: please wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.

Cupcake War and More

Grade 1-4; Instructors: Janet McMullen and Kerry Needle

9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8

Cupcakes are all the rage, and your little bakers will love this class full of fall themed cupcakes! Each week students will create four seasonally themed cupcakes including designs for Back to School, Fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.  Bakers will also have an opportunity each week to create a design of their own.  Students will receive step by step hands on instruction and by the end of the class will be able to create a beautiful selection of cupcakes for your Halloween party or Thanksgiving table.  Each student will bring home 4 completed cupcakes each week.  All pre-baked cupcakes, decorations and supplies will be provided.  NOTE: This class contains allergens such as nuts, eggs, dairy and gluten.

Yoga- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructors: Chelsea Celentano and Emma Kong

9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16 (This class will not meet 9/21)

Yoga is a discipline that can lead students in route toward a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them build a strong and flexible body.  Students will explore yoga poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation in a fun and calming environment. We will be storytelling and allowing creative expression. Creative expression will be encouraged in this class. We will move and learn to stretch our bodies in new creative ways. Through yoga poses, games, activities, music and stories, we will promote strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques will help to teach better focus, relaxation and self-control.  Each student is responsible for providing a personal yoga mat for the class.

Art & Soul- Celebrate Fall in Art- new class!

Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16 (This class will not meet 9/21)

Create fun and useful seasonal art projects celebrating the wonders of autumn with Art & Soul. Projects will feature harvest, fall foliage, Halloween and Thanksgiving themes. We will explore different art media including hand building with clay, pottery painting, rustic board art and mixed media projects sure to delight everyone.
