East School Before and After-School Classes - Winter 2017

Registration December 12 (9:30 am)- January 3

EAST SCHOOL

BEFORE/AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Class Times-8:00-9:00 a.m.- Students cannot arrive at school before 7:55 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  All students must be walked into the East School Lobby and released to the monitor on duty. No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted. Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts. 3:45-4:45 p.m.- Students will automatically be sent directly to the Galley at the end of the school day and grouped by class by the monitor. Dismissal Manager- If your child will not be attending After-School Fun on any day, you must indicate on the school dismissal manager “DO NOT SEND TO B/ASF TODAY” along with your dismissal instructions. 

Pick-Up and Late Pick-Up Policy-Children will be dismissed from after-school classes at the school gymnasium. Monitors will greet parents in the hallway and all children will be signature released to parents only.  You must present an ID at pick-up. A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 5:00 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued.

Registrations and Wait Lists• The registration period for the classes is posted both online and with the program information sheets.   • A class registration minimum and maximum is established.  Classes that do not meet the registration minimum student number will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to the parent.  • Late registrations submitted after the class begins will be with the approval of the Program Supervisor. No pro-rating of program fees will be allowed.     

Program Monitor-A Program Monitor will be on-duty in the main lobby during the B/ASF classes.  The monitor will have a first-aid kit and emergency management book. 

Class Cancellation-BOE class cancellations due to school closing, school late opening, or school early dismissal will be sent through the School communications.  The Recreation Department will send out an email notification if a schedule change occurs due to teacher illness, special event conflict, or change of room availability.  On these days, all children enrolled in ASF classes will be sent home the “regular” way.  An automatic adding of a make-up class at the end of the schedule will occur.  THE RECREATION WEBSITE WILL KEEP AN UP-TO-DATE LIST OF CLASSES, INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP CLASSES, ON THE WEBSITE INFORMATION PAGE. 

Refund Policy-$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class. $25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class. No refunds will be issued after the class starts. No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

NO NURSE WILL BE PRESENT DURING THE B/ASF PROGRAMS

All About Me: Mixed Media Art Journey- new class!

Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3(This class will not start until 1/23) (This class will not meet on 2/20)

Pop Art techniques, such as decoupage, silk screening, graffiti and optical illusion, will be used to create a mixed media art journal and works of art by hand building with clay and painting pottery in this fun class. Designs will feature lettering, names, hand prints and emojis that will reflect each child’s personality.  Class Fee: $260 (Min 10/Max 12)

East School Newspaper

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Jennifer Klemm

Calling all reporters, photographers, artists, and editors! Come put your talents together to create our own East School newspaper. Together, everyone will decide on a name for our newspaper, choose topics for articles, conduct interviews, take photos, and select other features to include in our final published newspaper. All features will be compiled together on computers, where you will have practice editing and formatting the pages. Our newspaper will be distributed to all East School teachers to share with the entire East School community! Class Fee: $201 (Min 8/Max 12)

Jedi Karate

Grade 1-3; Instructor: Kempo Academy of New Canaan

Students will enjoy obstacle courses, team challenges, themed games and Martial Arts fun! Our program will focus on a blend of fitness, strength and conditioning, agility and martial arts based games and activities. Participants will gain confidence, self-control, and group camaraderie. For students new to Kempo Academy, a karate belt will be provided. Class Fee: $200 (Min 8/Max 16)

East Chess Club

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Damian Donovan, Bedford Chess Inc.

The Chess Club is designed for the student who wants to advance their skills to a more competitive level.  Beginners through advanced players, all students will receive chess packets with level appropriate chess puzzles.  Learn to record your chess moves and then analyze your games with Grandmaster strength software.  Mr. Donovan brings 15 years of chess teaching experience to East.  Class fee: $180 (Min 10/Max 22)

East School Safari- new class!

Grades K-1; Instructor: Beverley Griffin

Lions and tigers and giraffes…oh my!  Come join us on a safari through the East School jungle as we learn about some fascinating animals and their habitats.  We will hunt for clues each week to discover the animal of the day, research interesting facts and get crafty with some hands on fun!  Our journey each day will end with animal yoga poses to calm the mind, body, and spirit. Class Fee: $217 (Min 8/Max 14)

Elementary STEM- new class!

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Peggy McNamara, District Technology Technician

In this 10 week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun! Class Fee: $264 (Min 6/Max 10)

Sports Variety K-1

Join your friends for your favorite after school games in a fun and supportive environment!  Both girls and boys will enjoy the opportunity to be active playing kickball, capture the flag, soccer, baseball and many others. Class Fee: $218 (Min 10/Max 26)

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. For students in grade 3 - 4 and those who has taken this program earlier would be using their robotics knowledge and doing advanced Robotics.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program. Class fee: $220 (Min 7/Max 14)

Computer Scratch Jr.

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Rob Polley

Come to the computer lab and learn Scratch Jr.!  Students use this fun program to learn coding and create their own interactive stories, games, animations and simulations – and share their creations with one another online.  Come expand your technological horizons! Class fee: $200 (Min 8/Max 15)

Snap Circuits

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Tom Dempsey

Children will be using Snap Circuits to make over 300 electronic devices.  It's easy and fun!  They will follow the colorful pictures and build exciting projects such as AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, propellers, lights, generators, and much more!! They will be able to play electronic games with their friends. All parts are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. Enjoy hours of fun while learning about electronics. No tools required. Class Fee: $314 (Min 4/Max 6)

Rad Lab Science

Grades K-2; Instructors: Rad Lab Teachers

Join us in the lab this winter to investigate dandelion helicopters, parachutes, rainbow rainstorms, bird beak races, fizzy dough, and more!  Build the strongest bridge, race water droplets, create your own kazoo, and make a winter bird feeder.  Through fast paced, hands-on investigations, scientists will encounter biology, chemistry, physics and beyond!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!  Class Fee: $372 (Min 12/Max 15)

Scrapbooking- new class!

Grades 1-4; Instructors: Jenna Dirocco and Assistant

Create your own scrapbook full of fun memories and share with your friends.  Each week students will use pictures to create pages for their books surrounding different themes (i.e. family, pets, friends, sports, birthdays, vacations).  Bring your own pictures and take home your very own scrapbook on the last day of class.  Class fee: $275 (Min 8/Max 12)

Kindergarten Chess- new class!

Come learn the basics of how to play the most popular game in the world.  It is a game that is fun for all ages.  This game will not only help build your mental skill, but your social skills as well.  You will learn the names of each chess piece, how each chess piece moves, opening game strategy, and rules of the game.  This class is for students who have not played chess before. Class Fee: $200 (Min 8/Max 16)

Indoor Flag Football

Grades 2-4; Instructors: Tom Taliercio and Chris Sangalli

Flag Football has become a fun way to play football without the contact and fear of injury.  Special game rules have flag belts with flags to pull to end the play.  Running, passing, interceptions, touchdowns all fun in the gym. Class fee: $218 (Min 10/Max 16)

Strings Band

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Students will become comfortable expressing themselves using the universal language of music.  Using the simple tunes, students will explore the basics of jazz improvisation.  Beginning with the spoken dialogue, call and response and question-and-answer technique students will learn how to make up simple tunes of their own.  At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends.  Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band. Class fee: $264 (Min 6/Max 20)

Come join us for a fun filled culinary experience.  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats.  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful winter and holiday recipes.  Some recipes include hot chocolate cookie cups, frozen s’mores, melted snowman bark, frozen popcorn snowballs and other delicious treats.  Let’s get baking! Class Fee:  $224 (Min 8/Max 14)
