West School Before and After-School Classes - Winter 2017

Registration December 12 (9:15 am)- January 3

WEST SCHOOL

BEFORE/AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Class Times-7:45-8:45 a.m.- Students cannot arrive at school before 7:40 am as no staff is on duty including the program monitor and office staff.  All students must be walked into the West School Lobby and released to the monitor on duty. No curb drop-off and drive-off is permitted. Following the class, children will be escorted to their respective playgrounds until school starts. 3:35-4:35 p.m.- Students enrolled in after-school classes must be registered in School Dismissal Manager for each day. Please enter BASF in the driver name and the name & cell number of the person picking the child up in the Describe Activity Box.  Students will automatically be sent directly to the Gymnasium at the end of the school day and grouped by class by the monitor. Carline/Dismissal Manager- If your child will not be attending After-School Fun on any day, you must indicate on the school carline/dismissal manager “DO NOT SEND TO B/ASF TODAY” along with your dismissal instructions. 

Pick-Up and Late Pick-Up Policy-Children will be dismissed from after-school classes at the school gymnasium by carline only. Monitors will greet parents in their cars and all children will be signature released to parents only.  No one other than a legal guardian, your emergency contact indicated on the BASF registration form, or the person indicated on the Dismissal Manager will be allowed to remove the child from the school.  You must present an ID at pick-up. A late pick-up fee of $20 will be enforced if your child is not signed-out by 4:55 p.m.  After two late fees, a child will be suspended from the class until a meeting is held between the parent and the program director to discuss the problem.  No refunds will be issued.

Registrations and Wait Lists • The registration period for the classes is posted both online and with the program information sheets.   • A class registration minimum and maximum is established.  Classes that do not meet the registration minimum student number will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to the parent.  • Late registrations submitted after the class begins will be with the approval of the Program Supervisor. No pro-rating of program fees will be allowed.     

Program Monitor-A Program Monitor will be on-duty in the main lobby during the B/ASF classes.  The monitor will have a first-aid kit and emergency management book. 

Class Cancellation-BOE class cancellations due to school closing, school late opening, or school early dismissal will be sent through the School communications.  The Recreation Department will send out an email notification if a schedule change occurs due to teacher illness, special event conflict, or change of room availability.  On these days, all children enrolled in ASF classes will be sent home the “regular” way.  An automatic adding of a make-up class at the end of the schedule will occur.  THE RECREATION WEBSITE WILL KEEP AN UP-TO-DATE LIST OF CLASSES, INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP CLASSES, ON THE WEBSITE INFORMATION PAGE. 

Refund Policy-$5 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs up to 7 days before the start of the class. $25 fee will be assessed if parent notification to the Recreation Department occurs within 7 days before the start of the class. No refunds will be issued after the class starts. No refunds will be issued if your child is dismissed for inappropriate behavior or suspended because of the late pick-up policy.

NO NURSE WILL BE PRESENT DURING THE ASF PROGRAMS

Computer SCRATCH Jr

Grades 2-4; Instructor: Deborah Cornwell

Scratch Jr. is an introduction to computer coding.  Students can create their own interactive stories and games.  In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer.

Kids Can Cook Too- new class!

Come join us for a fun-filled culinary experience!  Grab your aprons and baking hats and get ready to make some tasty treats!  Together we will prepare, measure, mix, bake, and even taste some delightful winter and holiday recipes!  Some recipes include hot chocolate cookie cups, frozen s’mores, melted snowman bark, Frozen popcorn snowballs and other delicious treats! Let’s get baking! Class Fee:  $245 (Min 8/Max 14)

Sports Variety 2-4

Join your friends for your favorite after school gym games in a fun and supportive environment!  Both girls and boys will enjoy the opportunity to be active after school outside or inside on inclement weather days.  Note: please wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.  Class Fee: $175 (Min 10/Max 26)

Hot Wheels Racing

Grades 1-4; Instructor: Tania O’Leary

Ready, set, race!  We’ll transform the classroom into a racetrack and learn how to make our cars go from fast to lightning speed.  You will build tracks out of new materials and customize your very own Hot Wheels car.  Each day we will drive, race, build, and create together to have fun and learn how Hot Wheels can relate to science.   Class Fee: $223 (Min 8/Max 12)

Beginner SPHERO- The Robotic Ball- new class!

SPHERO is incredible technology using a robot ball…“the APP-enabled ball that does it all”.  Students will work together as partners to control SPHERO with a school supplied iPad and programming will give their robot orders and visual blocks representing code.  They will be able to see an instant connection between their program and how the SPHERO robot reacts to their code.  SPHERO will ignite a love of robotics, coding, and STEM principals all through play. Class Fee: $286 (Min 6/Max 8)

Accessorize- new class!

Would you like to make unique gifts to give to your friends and family or even keep for yourself?  In this class, you will create earrings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets and rings using glass beads, wooden beads, alphabet beads, and glow in the dark beads, just to name a few!  You will make various types of jewelry using wire, elastic lace, and more.  This class will help you show off your creative side! Class Fee: $220 (Min 8/Max 12)

Club Invention “Castles, Catapults and Coats of Arms”- new class!

This Club Invention module incorporates the elements of STEM (science/technology/engineering/math).  We travel back to the middle ages to recreate an environment that was familiar during those times.  Students will apply lifestyle and science concepts that were known to people in the middle ages and use their skills to build projects that are based on science and engineering practices.  They will create jewelry and coats of arms, explore buoyancy as they engineer boats that float, construct tall towers and drawbridges, and engineer catapults to storm castles.   Class Fee: $210 (Min 12/Max 12)

Shimmy, Shake and Stretch- new class!

Get ready to MOVE!  We will be using various popular dances, shaking and shimmying our way through.  We will also learn how to properly stretch with yoga.  It’s a great way for your child to have fun and exercise those muscles.  This class is all about moving your feet to the BEAT!  From Zumba to yoga, we’ve got the moves. From beginners to seasoned dancers, we try new things together having fun and supporting each other along the way. Class Fee: $231 (Min 10/Max 18)

Rad Lab Science

Join us in the lab this winter to investigate dandelion helicopters, parachutes, rainbow rainstorms, bird beak races, fizzy dough, and more!  Build the strongest bridge, race water droplets, create your own kazoo, and make a winter bird feeder.  Through fast paced, hands-on investigations, scientists will encounter biology, chemistry, physics and beyond!  Students new to Rad Lab will receive a lab coat, goggles, and lab notebook.  Rad Lab is where imagination meets investigation!  Class Fee: $383 (Min 12/Max 15)

STEM Cooking Class- new class!

Do you love to experiment in the kitchen?  Join us for a cooking experience like no other!  In this class we will use STEM principals to help us mix up all kinds of tasty treats.  From states of matter to measuring the critical thinking to problem solving- this class will look at cooking from a STEM perspective.  We will use technology to help us create cooking videos and a digital recipe book.  We can’t wait to see what we cook up in the kitchen!

The Morning Math Club is a great way to spend the morning challenging your math and mind!  We will explore many areas of mathematics including number sense, problem solving, geometry, algebra, logical reasoning and more!  This year we will be trying out new games and math projects that will surely stretch your brain and keep those math skills fresh.  Join us as we have some fun with math.  Class fee: $215 (Min 8/Max 15 Gr. K-1; Max 20 Gr. 2-4)

Newspaper Club

Grades 3-4; Instructors: Stephanie Sommerville and Tania O’Leary

Written, published and distributed by our reporters, the reporters will be creating articles fact or fiction, poetry, and original drawings for our school newspaper.  Reporters will use various technologies such as: digital cameras, scanners, and software (MS Word, Tux Paint, and MS Publisher) to create the West Weekly.  The newspaper is such a fine communication tool for the West community.  Class Fee: $289 (Min 8/Max 12)

West Soccer Ambassadors

Grade 3; Instructors: Corey Fechter and Erin O’Reilly

This West Soccer Ambassadors will be held in the gymnasium and involve team-building challenges, fun soccer activities emphasizing technique, and guided discussion of strong character values such as respect, inclusion, encouragement, and sportsmanship.  Students will be challenged to demonstrate these values and speak on behalf of their experience throughout lessons. Students will finish as “school ambassadors” to lead by example among their classmates and friends along with sharpening their soccer skills.   Class Fee: $231 (Min 10/Max 15)

Strings Band

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Ilya Levitin

Students will become comfortable expressing themselves using the universal language of music.  Using the simple tunes, students will explore the basics of jazz improvisation.  Beginning with the spoken dialogue, call and response and question-and-answer technique students will learn how to make up simple tunes of their own.  At the end of the program students will participate in a mini concert for family and friends.  Each student will get a chance to perform an improvised solo segment accompanied by the band.Class fee: $285 (Min 6/Max 20)

West Chess Club

Join your school chessmates for a winter of fun matching your skills across the board.  Beginner Instruction on opening, middle and endgame with strong emphasis on playing!  Beginners will also learn the moves and rules of chess.  Intermediate instruction for those players who have advanced to this level.  Children will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to their level.  Class fee: $191 (Min 10/Max 22)

Elementary STEM- new class!

In this 10 week course you will use an iPad to explore a number of apps. Each week's class will begin with a fun math warm up using Colorful Math or King of Math apps, where you'll be able to improve your personal math scores. You will use Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur to learn basic coding, and progress into condition statements. We will explore numerous gravity, prediction and problem solving science apps like: BasketFall, Isaac Newton’s Gravity, Birdie Cat, Swing, and Cut the Rope, and then move onto more challenging coding apps like Lightbot Hour and RobotLogic LE.  All of the apps will allow you to learn at your own pace while having fun!

Cupcake War & More

Cupcakes are all the rage and your little bakers will love this ***All New** class!  Join New Canaan’s My Cupcake Party instructors for a combination class where students will be taught a few new techniques each week.  The winter session will include adorable Winter designs, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day designs.  Using a selection of ingredients provided, students will participate in a (non-competitive) “Cupcake War” where they will have an opportunity to create 2 of their own designs.  Each student will bring home a total of 4 completed cupcake designs each week.  All pre-baked cupcakes, decorations and supplies will be provided.  Note: this class contains allergens such as nuts, dairy and gluten. Class Fee: $326 (Min 10/Max 16)

Snap Circuits

Grades 3-4; Instructor: Michelle Hutchinson

Children will be using Snap Circuits to make over 300 electronic devices.  It's easy and fun!  They will follow the colorful pictures and build exciting projects such as AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, propellers, lights, generators, and much more!! They will be able to play electronic games with their friends. All parts are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. Enjoy hours of fun while learning about electronics. No tools required.Class Fee: $234 (Min 8/Max 10)

LEGO Robotics/Advanced Robotics

Grades 1-4; Instructor: CompuChild

Students follow step by step instructions on laptop for building LEGO robots and then connect it to computer and program it to move. Students who are in grades 3-4 and/or those who have taken this program before will be placed in the Advanced Robotics Class.  In Advanced Robotics, students will have missing instructions on building robots but with their robotics knowledge they would still be able to build the robots using gears, motors and make it move with their program.Class fee: $239 (Min 7/Max 14)

All About Me: Mixed Media Art Journey- new class!

Grade 1-4; Instructor: Pam Heberton, Art & Soul Pottery and Crafts

Pop Art techniques, such as decoupage, silk screening, graffiti and optical illusion, will be used to create a mixed media art journal and works of art by hand building with clay and painting pottery in this fun class. Designs will feature lettering, names, hand prints and emojis that will reflect each child’s personality.  Class Fee: $275 (Min 10/Max 12)

Jedi Karate- new class!

Grade 1-3; Instructor: Kempo Academy of New Canaan

Students will enjoy obstacle courses, team challenges, themed games and Martial Arts fun! Our program will focus on a blend of fitness, strength and conditioning, agility and martial arts based games and activities. Participants will gain confidence, self-control, and group camaraderie. For students new to Kempo Academy, a karate belt will be provided. Class Fee: $214 (Min 8/Max 20)
