Getabout

Getabout's mission is to provide rides to the "transportation disadvantaged," New Canaan's elderly and handicapped. Two wheelchair accessible vans operate nine hours a day Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings. Voluntary contributions of $2.00 per one way ride are suggested to help defray expenses. Rides must be reserved one day in advance by calling 972-RIDE or 972 -2318.

Through a special arrangement with Norwalk Transit, Getabout also provides rides to neighboring towns. Getabout is supported by the Town, the United Way, the New Canaan Community Foundation, Churches, associations, businesses and individuals. Their financial support is necessary to erase operational deficits resultant from the $8.00 gap that exists between ride income and costs.

In the year 2002, Getabout has introduced Saturday morning operations, rides to Wednesday evening Waveny concerts, 1000 free rides for Schoolhouse Apartment and Canaan Parish residents, out of town transportation to Norwalk hospital and doctors appointments. These initiatives were funded by leaders of the New Canaan business community, Rotary, the First County Bank, and special gifts from Churches.

Getabout measures its success by the volume of rides it provides to the transportation disadvantaged in New Canaan. In 2001 more than 8,000 rides were provided. The more rides, the better we serve our community and the greater our operational deficits. For over twenty years, Getabout has remained a viable public transportation service - erasing these operational deficits - by successfully raising funds from all segments of the New Canaan community.
