Probate Court

What We Do

The Probate Court is statutorily empowered with jurisdiction over a variety of different matters including the administration of estates, the appointment of guardians of minors, commitments of the mentally incapacitated, appointments of conservators for the incapacitated, approval of adoptions and grant name changes. The Probate Court, District of New Canaan was first established in 1938. The Court also processes applications for United States Passports

Probate wills Grant administration of estates Adjudicate claims against estates Oversee administration of estates and trusts, both living and testamentary Determine title to personal property Construe the meaning of wills and trusts Appoint:             Guardians for minors             Guardians for mentally retarded             Conservators for incapable persons and their estates    Commit the mentally ill and those addicted to alcohol or drugs to appropriate facilities Remove unfit parents as guardians of their children Finalize adoptions Grant name changes Determination of quarantine and vaccination cases in Public Health Emergencies
