Board of Education

MISSION

The Board of Education oversees and maintains New Canaan's public schools. It prepares and proposes the annual district-wide budget; designates the schools to be attended by the students; provides transportation for children; makes a continuing study of the need for school facilities and of a long-term building program; operates and maintains all buildings, lands, apparatus and other property used for school purposes; prescribes the rules for the management, studies, classification and discipline of the schools; prescribes the textbooks to be used; develops, adopts and implements written policies concerning homework, attendance, promotion and retention; approves all expenditures for purposes of public education; furnishes to the State Department of Education data required in the periodic reports specified by state statute; adopts and files with the State Board of Education all required policy statements; negotiates collective bargaining agreements with employees' exclusive bargaining representatives.

MEETINGS

Board of Education meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month (unless otherwise indicated) at 7:30 p.m. in the library of the New Canaan High School. The public is welcome to attend, but reminded that this is a meeting held in public, not a public meeting. The board has set aside time at the beginning and again at the end of each meeting for public comments. Two minutes will be allotted to each speaker and a maximum of 15 minutes to each subject.
