It is the mission of the New Canaan Recreation Department to enhance the quality of life for New Canaan residents by utilizing all resources under our control including public parks, public buildings, and public facilities to foster beneficial use of personal and family time for recreation and leisure. To accomplish this, we will provide and promote a wide variety of quality recreation services that meet citizen needs and interests at a reasonable cost.

Waveny Park is a Town of New Canaan municipal park and is open to New Canaan residents and their guests.

Who do I call to arrange to rent Waveny House for a wedding reception?

The New Canaan Recreation Department Office handles the rentals of Waveny House and the Lapham Community Center.

How do I go about signing up my child for Little League baseball?

The New Canaan Recreation Department runs a spring Tee Ball Baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-6. New Canaan Boys Baseball, Inc. is a private group that coordinates and runs spring baseball for boys and girls ages 7-18.

Where is the municipal golf course?

New Canaan does not have a municipal golf course. Local municipal golf courses are located in Norwalk, Stamford (2), Fairfield, Bridgeport, Trumbull, and Greenwich.

Are the tennis courts at the high school available to the public?

Yes, the town maintains all-weather courts at the New Canaan High School open year round. The courts are open dawn to dusk for New Canaan residents and their guests. Users do not need a permit to use the courts. School- sponsored teams and Recreation Department programs have first priority use of the courts.

How do I know when the town athletic fields are open or closed?

The Park Department determines when fields are open or closed and communicates this to the public by a 24-hour telephone hotline, 594-3610. Field closures are necessary to protect the longevity of the grass or diamond and for the safety of the participants during or after a rainfall.

Are there any ponds where I can go ice skating in the winter?

Mead Park pond and Mill Pond are monitored by the Park Department to determine safe conditions for ice skating. Once conditions are reached to allow skating, the Park Department will post a conditions flag at the pond and notify the Recreation Department. Both ponds have some lights for night skating.

Where can I go cross country skiing?

The schools and parks are a good place to cross country ski. After a snowfall, the Waveny Park trails are a great place to zig-zag through nature.
