We treat waste water and septic tank waste that is produced within the limits of the Town of New Canaan. In addition, we operate and maintain the Waste Water Treatment Plant along with three pumping stations and 25 miles of sanitary sewers.

Mission

The mission of the staff at the Waste Water Treatment Plant is to assure that our collection system (including pumping stations) operate effectively to convey waste water from individual contributors to the Treatment Facility. At the Treatment Plant, the mission is to treat the waste material so that the by-products meet the highest federal and state standards.

How many gallons of wastewater does the facility treat per day?

1.2 million gallons per day on an average day.

How much septage is brought to the plant?

3 million gallons per year.

Is there a charge for dumping septage at the plant?

As of May 1, 2009 their will be a septage dumping fee of $100.00 per thousand gallons.

Can I dump waste water from my Recreation Vehicle at the plant?

Yes, at no charge, however you must be a New Canaan resident.

Do you process any waste water from surrounding Towns?

No. New Canaan only.

Where is the treated water discharged?

Into the Five Mile River adjacent to the plant.

Who do I contact to see if I can hook up to the sewer system?

Any such proposal must be reviewed and approved by a number of Town Agencies including the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, Health Department and others as appropriate. A good place to start is the Public Works Engineering Department. See separate Web site pages.
