The majority of calls for service may not entail a major criminal investigation. Nevertheless, they constitute the bulk of our crime prevention and community relations programs. The quick and effective response of officers to the general needs of the community is a primary directive of the Department and is aimed at building community relations and strengthening the Public's confidence in their Police Department. The total number of incidents responded to and/or initiated by officers increased 13.1%, from 17,095 in 2004 to 19,327 in 2005. - Alarm Calls: The Department responded to 1669 residential and commercial alarms in 2005. .
- Assist Persons: There were 726 assists provided to persons/motorists in 2005.
- Animal Control: The Department responded to 457 animal control complaints in 2005.
- Rabies: The number of rabies or rabies related cases are categorized separately from other animal complaints. In 2005, there were 28 carcasses sent to the State Health Department for testing. Of those 28, four tested positive for rabies.
- Medical Assist: As first responders, the Police Department responded to 1204 emergency medical assist calls in 2005.
- Vandalism: Vandalism, whether to public or private property, continues to be a crime we are constantly confronting. Most private property vandalism is damage to mailboxes, while vandalism to public property tends to be broken windows. In 2005, the Department responded to 105 complaints of vandalism to public or private property.
- Vacant House Check: As a service to the community, homeowners can contact the Police Department at 203-594-3500 and give the dates when they will be away or on vacation. During that time an officer will check the exterior of the house to insure it is secure.
