Regardless of who operates a vehicle, parking violations (tickets) are officially issued to the registered owner of an offending vehicle. Fines may be paid by mail, in person at the Parking Bureau or by credit card online over the Internet. Online Parking Payments Unpaid fines are doubled 14 days after citation. Accumulations of five or more unpaid fines may result in immobilization (e.g. the "boot") or towing. Citations may be appealed before the Parking Commission by giving written notice of intent to the Parking Bureau within 10 days of the date of citation. You may print out the Formal Hearing Request form from this Web site, fill it out, and return it to the Parking Bureau.

Facilities

On-Street Parking

Free on-street parking is available on most downtown streets. Some spaces are reserved for handicapped users only. Parking time limits and on-street parking restrictions are shown by official signs on each street (and are strictly enforced). A few spaces (in Morse Court) along sidewalk can be used free for only 15 minutes. Most on-street spaces allow parking for 1 or 2 hours.

Be sure that your car is parked entirely within any parking space lines on the street or next to curb, right (passenger) side of car next to curb except where signs permit, tires within 12" of curb (car centered with one tire 6" from curb in diagonal spaces). You must leave diagonal parking headed in the same directions in which you arrived. You may not park on a curb.

After parking the maximum-posted time limit on a street, you may not park again (in the same block) for at least 1 hour.

Be sure that you observe all markings and signs for restricted places (crosswalks, fire hydrants and zones, handicapped spaces, 25' from-street-corners, stop signs, etc.). Be careful not to obstruct the view or free passage of any driveway. Double-parking is not allowed (except for commercial trucks allowed 20 minutes maximum time to unload).

Where signs or markings are absent, state traffic regulations apply.

All night parking on any street or most public lots in New Canaan is prohibited from mid-November to mid-April between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

All night parking is permitted in the Locust Avenue Lot. If you are not a permit holder, regular parking enforcement will resume the next business day after 8:30 a.m. (except for weekends and holidays).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I go about getting a parking permit for one of the Town lots? What is the cost?
You must be a New Canaan resident to purchase an annual Commuter parking permit. Call or visit the Parking Department to put your name on a waiting list. You may also print the "Request to be placed on the Waiting List for a Commuter Parking Permit" form from this Web site, fill it out, and return it to the Parking Bureau. Commuter Waiting List form Further details will be found on the Commuter Permits page.

If I have a Business in New Canaan and don't have ample parking, how do I go about getting a Parking Permit in town? What is the cost?
You may call or visit the New Canaan Parking Department to put your Business Name on a waiting list. You may also print the "Request to be placed on the Waiting List for a Business Parking Permit" form from this Web site, fill it out, and return it to the Parking Bureau. Business Waiting List form Further details will be found on the Business Permits page.

Why is the waiting list for the RR/Lumberyard so long, when I see many empty spaces most of the time?
A study has indicated that many people do not use their permits on a daily basis. The Parking Bureau for this reason has issued many more permits than spaces. Also, Avalon Properties has the use of 40 spaces, and the Bank of New Canaan has the use of 28 spaces.

If I commute occasionally to the city, where can I park in New Canaan?
A permit to park for a full day in an unoccupied Permit Space in any Permit Lot may be obtained from the Parking Bureau for $6.00. A maximum of two Day Passes may be used per week (except for special circumstances). These passes are available to New Canaan residents only.

For general shopping and business, where can I park in the town of New Canaan?
Most Parking Lots in New Canaan have metered parking. Most streets in downtown New Canaan have free on-street parking. Please observe time limits posted on street signs. Follow instructions posted on individual parking meters, or on the "Iron Mike" system.

I know of out-of-town residents who display a New Canaan Parking Permit on their car. How is this possible?
Out-of-town residents should not have a New Canaan Parking Permit. If a permit is found in a vehicle that is not registered with the Parking Bureau, a citation for misuse of permit will be issued. Some New Canaan residents own and/or lease out-of-state registered vehicles.

How do I go about appealing a parking ticket?
The citation may be appealed before the Parking Commission by giving written notice of intent to the Parking Bureau within 10 days of the citation date. Responsibility for receipt of the citation and timely remittance rests with the violator. Prior to the Commission Meeting, a notification will be sent to you with the date and time of meeting. Further details will be found on the Enforcement page.

How do I get a Handicapped Parking Permit?
You can call or visit the State Motor Vehicle Department to apply for a Handicapped Parking Permit.

Who establishes the cost of a Parking Permit, or sets the Parking Meter rates?
The Parking Commission recommends to the Board of Selectmen the establishment of fees.

What is the daily parking cost to take the train?
The cost to park for 12 hours at the Railroad Station and at Talmadge Hill is $3.00. (See Parking Lots for details)

Where can I purchase a Parking Debit Card?
Parking Debit Cards can be purchased at the Parking Bureau, 77 Main Street or by mail. There is a mailbox at the Railroad Station (inside station house) and a mailbox at Talmadge Hill that holds envelopes to order debit cards by mail. Fill out the envelope and mail to the New Canaan Parking Bureau.
